Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 31: Election process in the state has begun. Political parties have geared up for the electoral exercise. Even the ruling NC which had opposed the electoral exercise at this point in time or in the wake of the devastation caused by flood in parts of the Valley but failed to put across its point of view has decided to taste political waters. It is a welcome decision. It is not just the NC, PDP, Congress, BJP, CPI-M, BSP and the Panthers Party which are announcing their candidates and busy these days in giving final touches to their election campaign. Several smaller political groups are also busy both in Kashmir as well as Jammu.
And just when the political parties have come forward for the election, a handful of traitors at the behest of their mentor, Pakistan, have unleashed a campaign against the scheduled elections. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah and a few other Pakistani agents are the ones who have started urging the people to boycott the polls.
It is heartening that the law and order authorities have swung into action to foil their nasty and anti-democratic attempt. On Thursday, the police raided the houses/offices of many separatists and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, his deputy Advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat; chairman Hurriyat Conference JK Shabir Ahmad Shah; chairman National Front Nayeem Ahmad Khan; Hurriyat Conference (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar and other separatist leaders, Moulana Tari and Zaffar Akbar Bhat.
Besides, the police also arrested the so-called secretary general JKLF Ghulam Rasool Dar Eidi, deputy organizer Mir Siraj-ud-din Davood, district president Kupwara Mohammad Rafiq War, district president Budgam Gulzar Ahmad Bhat Pahalwan, district secretary Kulgam Nazir Ahmad Rather and Abdul Ahad Ganai from Tangmarg. Dozens of other separatists and their supporters were also arrested. The police reportedly arrested Feroz Ahmad Khan, Bashir Ahmad Wani, Hakeem Showkat, Asadullah Parry and Mairaj Din Nanda. The police also raided the houses of other separatists, including Mukhtar Waza and Javid Mir, but they were not present at their residences during the police raids. Geelani was already under house arrest.
It was a major operation as the reports suggest that the police raided the residences and offices of separatists in parts of the Kashmir Valley. The much-needed police action on separatists came ahead of the assembly elections in the state beginning on November 25 and the objective was to nip the evil in the bud. Commenting on the operation against these Pakistani agents and mercenaries, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Abdul Ghani Mir, said that the law enforcement agency will take stringent action against those who would dare to disrupt the electoral exercise. "Nobody will be allowed to disrupt the poll process," he was quoted as saying. "Preventive action is being taken and very strong action will be taken against those elements trying to intimidate people," he also reportedly said.
It is significant to note that the police action and the resultant arrests of separatists and their henchmen evoked a positive response from the public in the sense that people didn't come on to the streets to stage protests in support the self-styled freedom fighters. Only a handful of supporters of traitor Malik took to streets in the Maisuma locality and they were also taken to task by the police. The cops retaliated with tear-gas shells when the hooligans pelted stones at them. The police also baton-charged these mischievous elements. The fact that the whole operation was conducted in an effective manner and it did not create any law and order problem is a proof that these traitors and mercenaries do enjoy popular support in the Kashmir Valley.
While all right-thinking people support the police action, there are responsible quarters in the state who would want the authorities to eradicate the menace of terrorism and separatist once and for all. Their solution is: Either send them to Pakistan using all means or punish them for the acts of treachery by constituting fast-track courts.
