Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 31: National Conference leaders including its working President Omar Abdullah faced embarrassment today as a group of the party workers and activists carried out protest demonstrations against the mandate to one of the sitting legislators of the party from the Srinagar district.
The protesters stopped the vehicle of National Conference General Secretary, Ali Mohammad Sagar as soon as he came out of the party headquarters after announcing the mandate for the remaining seats of the assembly elections. The protesters could be removed only when Sagar along with his personal security men virtually dragged them to make way.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that dozens of National Conference workers and activists of the Zadibal assembly segment protested as soon as they came to know that sitting legislator Peer Afaq Ahmad has once again been given the mandate from the constituency. The protesters raised slogans against the party leaders and accused them of not paying heed to the suggestions put forward by the party workers and activists.
The National Conference workers and activists alleged that Afaq failed to live up to the expectations of the people of the constituency and as such did not deserve to get the mandate for the 2014 assembly elections. They smelt of something fishy in the whole deal and accused the sitting legislator of greasing the palms of the top leadership of the party.
Some of the protesters turned vociferous in their protest and gave vent to their feelings. These people slept on the road as a mark of protest against the party decision to give mandate to Afaq. They did not allow the party general secretary to move ahead in his vehicle as soon as the meeting of the party leaders concluded at the party headquarters.
The situation turned volatile and Sagar along with his personal security personnel had to come down in order to make way to move ahead. These people virtually pleaded with the protesters to call off the protest. But as the protesters were not ready to give in the police personnel posted with Sagar virtually dragged them in order to make way for the party general secretary.
After being dragged by the personal security of the NC General Secretary, the protesters also raised slogans against him. They accused the NC leaders of exploiting the sentiments of party cadre while giving mandate to the sitting legislator who did nothing for his constituency during the past six years. The protesters said that Zadibal constituency is one of the worst under developed constituencies of the Kashmir valley more so the Srinagar city.
Meanwhile, Early Times has learnt from sources that proximity of Afaq with the party general secretary ensured that he gets the mandate this time too from the Zadibal constituency. The sitting legislator managed to get the mandate only due to his closeness with Sagar despite the fact that he has failed as the legislator after being elected from the constituency in 2008.
"It seems that Afaq has entered into some business deal with Sagar with the latter getting the lion's share out of the same. This coupled with the camaraderie between the two made the job easy for Afaq while leaving the party cadre fuming. The anti-incumbency factor may play an important role in upcoming elections and one should not be surprised in the sitting legislator bites the dust this time around," said sources.
