Kishtwar, Dec 13 : The people of Kishtwar District today took to street over erratic power supply in the town and demand immediate revoking of current power curtailment schedule which exceeds more 12 hours daily. The large number of people today blocks the road outside Deputy Commissioner Office Kishtwar for more than half hour. The angry people were raising slogans against the Power Development Department and demanded revocation of curtailment schedule.
"The department installed electronic meters in our homes and promised regular supply of electricity- but today we are facing more than 12 hour regular power cut from 6 AM to 12 Midnight" said Tilak Raj Shan. He said that large number of people in the District has received inflated bills on flat rates, added that the student community and the business community are the worst suffers of frequent electricity cuts. "The examinations of our children's exams were postponed till March-April 2015, they want to study till late in the evening, but frequent electricity cuts are badly affecting their studies" said Shamer Singh Bhandari, a Congress leader from Kishtwar. He said that the PDD department must revoke the decision of curtailment in the interest of student community. A businessman Vaid Prakesh Gupta said that business community normally relied on electricity during day time, added that 8 hour plus cuts during day time badly affected the business of business community. When contacted PDD officials informed the "Early times" that the schedule of the curtailment is being prepared by the department at highest level and local TLMD Officials are only following the instruction.
They said that forced curtailment directions to Kishtwar grid was also instructed from Jammu. "As far as metered area is concern, there is no issue of billing as the bill is charged as per the meter reading, while in case of non-metered areas, the government has fixed the monthly rant Rs. 350 per month which is previously fixed at Rs. 110" said PDD officials. The officials said that electricity consumers living in rural areas did not prefer meter as a result of which the monthly bill in these cases has been fixed at Rs. 350 per month.
They denied that the department is sending inflated bills to its customers and cleared that the monthly rent for non-metered areas is Rs 350.
