| Acting VC takes rightwing route for permanent appointment, appeases BJP leadership in JU | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: Faculty in University campus these days is intensely debating acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.D. Sharma's rightwing shift and apparent appeasement of a selected few.
If the university faculty members are to be believed, Sharma violated sanctity of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) to appease none other than BJP's senior leader and candidate from Billawar constituency Dr. Nirmal Singh by allowing his wife, who is a contractual employee to campaign for her husband. Prior to this, faculty members maintain that Sharma bestowed Prof. Rajnikant with the charge of Academic Staff College (ASC).
They added that acting VC did this to purportedly appease Dr. Nirmal Singh, whose wife is a contractual employee in the department of Home Science which is headed by Prof. Rajni Dhingra, wife of Prof. Rajnikant. Faculty members, who on condition of anonymity, said that Sharma handed over the charge of ASC to Rajnikant despite the availability of several other faculty members and officials, some of whom have been posted on various unimportant positions.
The charge of ASC was with Registrar Prof. Manoj Dhar after Prof. Rajinder Gupta was removed unceremoniously by the ex-VC Prof. Mohan Pal Singh Isher. Sharma within days of taking over handed over the charge to Prof. Rajnikant, who is already Director of Ramnagar Campus besides being an important faculty member in the Physics department. Sources said that Sharma is doing all possible things to ensure his appointment as permanent VC of University of Jammu.
They further said that by giving Prof. Rajnikant charge of ASC, Sharma ensured that Dr. Nirmal Singh's wife is able to campaign without much hindrance for her husband, who in an important member of the BJP team. This earned Sharma the trust of Singh, who according to sources has promised to get him appointed as next VC of Jammu University, something which is unheard of in the appointment of a VC and which is usually done by a committee of intellectuals.
Sources further said that Rajnikant after being appointed as Director of ASC in the first instant censured a IV Class employee by penalising him for having gone for prayers. They added that he did not even once asked his wife how she allowed a contractual employee to enjoy holidays while he himself penalised a poor IV Class employee for having gone for prayers.
On being asked, Prof. Rajnikant said "Prayers are confined to a schedule. You cannot leave the office when you want for prayers." He added that the said employee has already taken leave in the month of November. However, his wife Prof. Rajni Dhingra, who is HOD of the Home Science department, did not respond. Her silence does raise questions on her conduct and point towards the fact that University has different yardsticks for two different set of employees. |
