All eyes on Srinagar as fourth phase of Assembly elections being held today | Fate of Mufti, Omar, Sagar, Peerzada, Mir set to be sealed in EVMs | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 13: Stage is all set for the holding of the fourth phase of Assembly elections in the state. Fate of various political heavyweights of the different political parties would be sealed tomorrow as and when the polling would come to an end. More than 14 lakh and 73 thousand voters are eligible to cast their votes in the fourth phase with elections spread across the Kashmir and Jammu regions of the state. Electors in 18 assembly seats would get a chance to choose among 182 candidates fighting the elections during this phase of elections. Elections are being held in 16 assembly seats of Kashmir valley and Samba and Vijaypur seats in the Samba district of the Jammu region. In the Kashmir valley elections are being held on the eight seats of Srinagar district, six seats of Anantnag district and two seats in the Shopian district. In the Srinagar district elections are being held in Amira Kadal, Batmaloo, Sonwar, Habba Kadal, Eidgah, Khanyar, Hazratbal and Zadibal constituencies. In the Anantnag district elections are being held in the Anantnag, Bijbehara, Pahalgam, Shangus, Dooru and Kokernag assembly seats. Elections are also being held for the Shopian and Wachi assembly seats in the Shopian district. The fourth phase of elections is being watched keenly since some of the leaders of main political parties are in the fray from different assembly seats. Notable among them are People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister and National Conference working President, Omar Abdullah, Legislative Assembly Speaker, Mubarak Gul, Minister for Tourism, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Rural Development Minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar and Haj & Auqaf Minister, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed. The eight seats of Srinagar district are being keenly watched by the political pundits as it is for the first time that PDP has got great chance of winning some of the seats from the summer capital of the state. Once a stronghold of National Conference, Srinagar has of late come up as one of the districts where PDP has made inroads. Political pundits say that PDP has great chances of winning Amira Kadal, Batmaloo and Zadibal seats in the Srinagar district. They also believe that PDP candidates are quite capable of posing an upset or two in the other assembly seats of the district. Close fight is being presumed in the Khanyar assembly seat where Sagar is pitted against Mohammad Khursheed Alam of PDP. In the Anantnag district there is a close fight between National Conference, People’s Democratic Party and Congress on the six assembly seats. Sitting legislators like Peerzada Mansoor Hussain (PDP), Rafi Ahmad Mir (PDP), Ghulam Ahmad Mir (Congress) and Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed (Congress) seem to be on a weak wicket. One should not be surprised if some of the present MLAs lose this time around in the assembly elections. In the Shopian district it can be expected that PDP will win the Shopian seat but there is a close fight between the party and National Conference on the Wachi seat that was represented by Mehbooba Mufti in the existing Assembly. Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure that there is free and fair polling in the fourth phase. Since most of the Assembly seats are either sensitive or hyper-sensitive extra security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of polls. It also remains to be seen what would be the response of the city residents since Srinagar has a reputation of boycotting polls in the past. Elections for all the 46 assembly seats of Kashmir would be completed once the fourth phase of elections concludes tomorrow. In the fifth and final phase 20 seats of the different districts of Jammu would go to polls on December 20. |
