Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 13: External Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who knows nothing about Jammu & Kashmir, on Friday declared that the BJP would create a history in Jammu & Kashmir by getting absolute majority just as it had achieved landmark figure in Lok Sabha elections followed by Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls and said return of peace in the State would lead to vast opportunities in tourism, industrial and employment sectors. She made this statement while addressing two election rallies at Mahanpur (Basohli) and Bani Assembly segments in Kathua district.
There was nothing abnormal when she claimed that the BJP would get absolute majority and form government in the station its own. The NC, the Congress and the PDP have also made similar claims. Political parties do make such claims to keep the morale of the cadres high even if their leaders know that their parties are unlikely to perform well. Sushma Swaraj's claim should be viewed in this context. However, it would be proper to say that the BJP is unlikely to win a single seat in Kashmir because mobilization their against the BJP is on an unprecedented scale, as also because the separatists are motivating the Kashmiri people to vote in good numbers in their own style, notwithstanding their boycott calls. The BJP may win one or two seats in Ladakh and improve its tally in Jammu by a few seats. It may win around 20 seats. This is what the ground situation as it prevails today in Kashmir and Jammu suggests. In 2008, the BJP had won 11 seats.
Sushma Swaraj not only made a loud claim that the BJP would get absolute majority in the 87-member House but also sought to mislead women of the state by declaring that they will get 33 per cent reservation in the state legislature in case the BJP is voted to power. No woman in the state is going to trust Sushma Swaraj or for that matter any other BJP leader. The reason is simple. The reason is that a party that gave mandate only to two women cannot be trusted when it says that it would give 33 per cent reservation to women in both the houses of legislature. The BJP gave mandate to two Kashmiri women, including Hina Bhat, who is a staunch supporter of Article 370 and dictating terms to the BJP. The BJP did not consider any women in Jammu and Ladakh competent to contest the assembly election despite the fact that there were many committed women workers in the party in these two reasons. The BJP is just like other political parties which hoodwink women, garner their votes and dump them after the election process is over. It, like the Congress, the NC and other political parties, takes womenfolk for granted. The fact is that the BJP is not a party with a difference. It is as good or as bad as the Congress and other political parties when it comes to the crunch.
