Early Times Report

Khrew, Dec 13: The revered Kashmiri Hindu 500-year- old temple of Jawala Ji Mata popularly known as (Jawala Mukhi Mandir) was gutted in a mysterious fire incident today morning in Khrew area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, resulting the damage of temple of at least 40 lakh rupees and plunging the Kashmiri Pandits into anguish and grief.
“The fire broke out in the Jawala Mata temple at around 08:15 a.m. Fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the blaze,” a police official said.
However, there was no report of anyone getting hurt in the incident, he said, adding that the preliminary report confirms the incident was due to electric shot circuit. He said the main structure of the temple was completely gutted in the fire. “The jawala ji temple is located on zabarwan mountain range on a small hillock, a flight of about 350 devri stones up from the base which made it difficult for us including locals and police to douse the fire immediately,” a fire official told Early Times.
The fire has spread widely within no seconds it has engulfed the whole structure as the temple was made of fine ancient Kashmiri wooden architecture with black stone image of Jawala Ji inside the tomb.
Meanwhile, the Temple located on the top of the small mountain is under strict vigil of the army.
However, the Jawala Ji Samiti Khrew, Kashmir (camp office Jammu) of Jawala Ji temple Avtar Kishen Bhat organizer of Samiti while talking to Early Times on phone said: “We fail to understand how the shot circuit happened. Recently we had replaced the main meter board. As prima-facie of the case, the fire seems the result of mismanagement, carelessness and negligence of the persons who are watching the temple.”
He blames the mismanagement and negligence of Dharmatma trust for the fire in the 500-year-old building, “We have already send the notice to Dharmatma trust for the expenses to get renovation of temple but they thief dharamshalla have not seen any pain towards temple,” he said
Not only the Kashmir Pandits have expressed grief and anguish over the fire engulfed the temple but local khrew boy has also updated the status on his wall on facebook, “Famous Jawala Ji Temple in Khrew a symbol of brotherhood and worship set ablaze allegedly by Indian army who were provided the duty to safe guard this ancient monument,” Status of Ashfaq sofi facebook user reads.
Pertinantly the Jawala Ji Temple Khrew is among the ancient Shrines of Kashmir Hindus and Goddess is the presiding deity of half of kashmir Hindus. On the day of Arshrad Chaturdashi(Haare Choodeh) a religious congregation was held every year on July-August at this ancient shrine in which thousands of Hindus across the country used to participate.
