Let Pak army operation against terrorists be intensified
12/22/2014 9:19:15 PM
If the reports on elimination of over 120 terrorists in Waziristan area of Pakistan in army operation during the last three days are any guide the sacrifice of 148 people, including 132 school children, who were killed by terrorists in Peshawar the other day may not go waste. This time the Nawaz Sharif led Government and the Pakistan Army chief,Gen.Raheel Sharif, and the Corps commanders seem to be quite keen to wage a decisive war against terror. The first step Islamabad has taken in this direction has been lifting o ban on execution of terrorists. And when General Raheel Sharif signed the execution warrant for Dr Usman (aka Mohammed Aqeel), he crossed an invisible line. Usman, who had led a 10-man assault team which attacked the Pakistan army headquarters in 2009, taking 42 hostages and killing 14 troops, should have been executed a long time ago. He was spared because the Punjab Taliban led by Usman threatened dire revenge if he was executed. This time, the General had his way.The Army Chief and the Government would have not gone in for lifting of the ban on execution of terrorists had not the country been swept by peoples'anger and anguish over the massacre of 132 school students. Both Nawaz Sharif and Gen. Raheel could feel the pulse of people and in the interest of peace in Pakistan the Army chief gave a green signal to the troops to intensify military operations against the terrorists.
Killing of 120 terrorists in three days clearly indicates how the terrorists have converted the entire Pakistan-Afghanistan border belt into a safe sanctuary for the militants, especially for the Taliban. The Peshawar school massacre would have not taken place had the Army carried out sustained operations against the terrorists of all hues, especially the Taliban. At and stage the Government opted for talks with the Tahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan in order to ensure peace in the country.Despite the Government having utilized the services of some negotiators talks did not succeed because the TTP leaders tried to dictate terms to the Government. They did so because the TTP leaders believed that the Government had buckled under their pressure and wanted to buy peace.Though the Government blocked the channels of dialogue with the TTP,the operations against terrorists continued to be slow and sporadic. And whenever the Army launched the operations against the terrorists they would sneak into the neighbouring areas and after the operations were suspended the Taliban would return to their hideouts in Waziristan.
And of late Islamabad has stopped objecting to the US Drone strikes against the terrorists in the Waziristan area and during the last three days the US Drones carried out a number of strikes against the terrorists. This is the time when Sharif,Pakistan Prime Minister, should promote coordination with another Sharif, Army Chief, and the vice versa so that military operations against the terrorists were not suspended till the Army accounted for all the Taliban and other terrorists. The first thing Pakistan should do was to shut all the arms training camps which had been set up for militants who could later be pushed into Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out acts of sabotage and violence. Secondly, Pakistani troops should desist from resorting to ceasefire violations on the border and suspend their support to militants who were to be pushed into Jammu and Kashmir. In the interest of peace and improved ties with India Islamabad should come down heavily on prominent extremists and fundamentalists, including Hafiz Saeed, Lakhvi, Dawood Ibrahim and others because they have been providing moral and financial support to terrorists. There is no harm if Nawaz Sharif accepts Modi's offer for assistance in ending the menace of terror.
