For the sake of Kashmiri aspirations

JAMMU, Dec 22: The possibility of the PDP not securing an absolute majority in the 87-member House has upset many anti-Narendra Modi elements in the Valley. It has upset them to the extent that they have urged both the PDP and the NC leaders to rise above party politics, surmount their ego problem and join hands to form next government in the state. Their argument is that there is no fundamental difference between the two Kashmir-based parties and it would be only in the fitness of things if they joined hands and work together for the Kashmiri cause.
One such person who has urged the Muftis and Abdullahs to forget the past and join hands is none other the bitter critic of New Delhi and BJP and Narendra Modi and an ardent believer in the concept of right to self-determination M Ashraf. What exactly has he said? He has, inter-alia, said: "There are only two mainstream regional parties (in Kashmir) claiming to represent the 'true' aspirations of the people. According to them the aspirations of the people are within the existing external framework. They would like to get the people a place of honour and dignity within the present political parameters. But so far they have failed to achieve even this limited goal. Again the problem is their failure to complement each other. They are wasting their energies in confronting each other even though their professed goals are same. They present a perfect example of tongue and groove and should have normally joined long back. The differences are only of nomenclature. One is pleading for the restoration of the already agreed autonomy within the Union which has been totally diluted over the years while as the other calls it the 'self-rule' with an undefined external dimension. Both have an interesting composition contrasting with each other. One has a good material of old stalwarts but inconsistent and fickle-minded leadership (read Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah) devoid of political acumen. The other has seasoned leadership (read Mufti Mohammad Sayeed) with political sagacity but no substantive material. They have rather a collection of defectors. The two could fit in easily as a tongue and groove joint and become a formidable combination which would make our common adversary feel very uneasy. If only they would rise above the 'family' and their egos, they could make a difference".
It is a fact that autonomy and self-rule are two sides of one and the same coin. It is also true that both want New Delhi to engage with Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists to resolve the Kashmir issue. It is also true that both are sub-regional parties having their support-base basically confined to Kashmir Valley and a few pockets here and there in Jammu province. But, at the same time, it cannot be denied that the Muftis and the Abdullahs have no love lost for each other. The Abdullahs consider the PDP a conspiracy against the NC and they also accuse the Muftis of flirting with the BJP in order to weaken the NC. As for the Muftis, they consider the Abdullahs the sole cause responsible for most of the troubles in Kashmir and dismiss the NC as anti-people, anti-democratic and unscrupulous.
The truth, in short, is that both the parties have a fundamental difference as far as the nature of leadership is concerned. They cannot join hands, notwithstanding the fact that there are no permanent friends and enemies in politics. The PDP and the NC are like the Congress and the BJP, which can do anything but cannot form a coalition, come what may. The PDP came into being to neutralize the influence of the NC like the BJP was formed to counter the influence of the Congress and similar other outfits and provide an alternative to the people. The likes of M Ashraf would do well to recognize the ground realities.
