`Smart city project after local body elections'

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 24: The Centre has sought holding of urban local bodies elections as the elections are a must for starting the process of the smart cities, the favourite project of the Narendra Modi. The State government, which wants Jammu and Srinagar to be included in the list of the smart cities, has been told that the no real headway can be made unless the local bodies elections are held.
According to the sources, the Central Government in a review meeting on the work to be started for developing smart cities sought local body elections. The elections for the local bodies have not been held for many years. The former Omar Abdullah government didn't make any effort to hold these elections fearing a political setback and also losing his political authority, as his popularity was wanning all the time. 'Omar Abdullah made the greatest disservice to the state by not holding these elections. His government even succumbed to the pressure of imposing even a nominal tax in the cities for the homes, which was one of the conditions to get central assistance. Shaky Omar Abdullah caring just about his chair didn't make any effort,' said a senior official.
This fact was also exposed when the CM chairing the board meeting of the Rajouri and Poonch districts said that Rs 1500 crore central assistance for development town was stopped by the Centre on account of not holding these elections. "Apart from the Bhaderwah no other town in the State is developed. Bharderwah was developed only on the intervention of the former CM Azad. The Central government had enough schemes to develop small towns also, apart from the big cities, but no effort was made to develop them" said the official. According to the sources, the CM Mufti Sayeed taking a serious note of the it and the fact that the Deputy CM, who holds the urban development ministry, are keen to develop Jammu and Srinagar cities will hold deliberations on announcing the dates for the urban local bodies elections, which is also necessary, as they have promised development all around.
