Avinash Azad Early Times Report Jammu, June 24: Proverb ‘Just below the lanterns’ lies the darkness’ seems appropriate for University of Jammu as, most colleges affiliated with JU have started semester system for under graduate courses, but the Directorate of Distance Education, JU is yet to introduce the course. Moreover, syllabus for UG courses has also not been finalized till date. Sources told Early Times due to unwillingness of some faculty members at DDE, the system has not been introduced. “It is strange but fact that the university will offer different degrees for same courses. Students under graduate courses enrolled at DDE will get their bachelor degree, while others pursuing their courses in other colleges will get degree as per semester system”, they said, ridiculing inefficiency of University Administration to put in place the new system. They said the DDE has proved to be best place for enjoyment of professors, who have been drawing hefty salaries without teaching the students. “If the system is introduced they (teachers) would have to teach twice in a year, those who are not willing to take classes are lobbying against the introduction of the semester scheme,” sources claimed, adding that the admissions for under graduate courses would start soon, but syllabus has not been finalized yet. Expressing concern over, alleged failure of vice-chancellor to bring transparency in functioning of university of Jammu, sources said, that DDE seems another autonomous body within the university, where faculty makes or breaks rules as per its convenience. “Despite availability of required, experienced faculty for various courses offered by the DDE, the administration hired manpower from outside to conduct classes”, sources said, adding that faculty is employed at DDE to teach under graduate courses, but for the purposes DDE has to outsource the man power to meet its requirements. When contacted Director Distance Education, JU Prof VD Singh said that semester system system has not begun yet. “Decision regarding the issue is likely to be taken in meeting scheduled on June 29, with Dean Academic Affairs”, he said.
