SRINAGAR, June 24: Protests rocked the University of Kashmir campus today over the arrest of an M Phil Scholar bringing the academic activities in the campus to a grinding halt. The situation in the campus continues to be very tense as the arrested student has not been released so for.
Sources told Early Times that to celebrate International Yoga Day; the department of physical education of the university had made the arrangements to celebrate the day on June 21. The department had made full preparation for the same and had erected a tent in the university campus on June 20. "The students of the university had come to know about the plans of the university to celebrate the Yoga Day. The students after returning from the mosques late in the Saturday evening dismantled the tent as a mark of protest against celebrating the Yoga day," said sources.
Sources said that VC Professor Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi entered into an agreement with the angry students that the day will not be celebrated in the campus. But the reaction from the police followed on Monday with the arrest of a M. Phil student namely Muzamil Ahmad, who hails from Kakapora, Pulwama.
"The students protested against the arrest of the Scholar and even encircled the office of Vice Chancellor of the university seeking his intervention for the release of the arrested scholar. The VC took out his phone and pretended to talk to someone for the release of the scholar but nothing positive happened," said sources.
The protesting students went to the office of the SP Hazratbal to enquire about the whereabouts of the arrested scholar got dismayed and disappointed after the police officer feigned ignorance saying that he has no knowledge about the arrest made, said the sources.
The situation in the campus became volatile on Wednesday as the protesting students, who were hundreds in number, registered a strong protest against the university authorities. Not only this, as per the sources, the agitating students locked every office from the outside, including that of the VC.
The routine work in the campus has been badly affected on account of the growing tension, said the sources. The situation, according to the sources, continues to be tense and if the arrested Scholar is not released, there is a possibility of chain of actions and reactions in the campus.
As per the sources, the protesting students have come to know that the arrested scholar has been taken to the Shergarhi police station that has made them more apprehensive about his safety.
