Leave beef ban issue to courts, BJP tells PDP
Last minute bid to save sinking coalition boat

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 28: The PDP-BJP coalition government in J&K is believed to be making last minute bid to ensure its survival in wake of the beef ban controversy.
Senior BJP leaders, according to sources, have conveyed to their counterparts in the PDP that in case the controversy was not resolved, the party may be forced to pull out of the coalition. It would result in a new political controversy leading to dissolution of the Assembly to be followed by fresh election.
"The top BJP leaders are aware of the negative impact the fresh election can have on the fate and future of their party in Jammu region where people's anger against it has increased to new height," said sources.
They said the PDP leadership has been told to make a last minute bid to save the situation because once the BJP withdraws support the PDP may not be able to form government with the support of the Congress which has only 12 members in the Assembly. "The PDP leadership has been told to leave the beef ban issue to the courts," said sources.
Reports indicated that Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta may reject the controversial bill seeking revocation of the ban on bovine slaughter in the state.
This controversial bill was moved by the National Conference (NC) on September 16 and another bill of a similar nature was moved by lone CPM member MY Tarigami on September 18.
Gupta, who was in Jammu, reached Srinagar on Monday morning to review preparations for the forthcoming autumn session of the Assembly. He will finalise business calendar for proceedings of the House.
"While finalizing the business calendar for seven sittings of the Assembly, the Speaker is unlikely to admit the NC's or CPM member's bills," said the sources, adding that a "resolution moved by a BJP member will be rejected to maintain balance."
While the CPM and the NC had moved bills in the Assembly for the forthcoming session seeking omission of Sections 298-A, 298-B, 298-C and 298-D of the Ranbir Penal Code to revoke the ban of beef, BJP MLA Ravinder Raina had moved a resolution seeking capital punishment for those found selling or consuming beef in J&K.
"The coalition could be saved if the PDP supports the Speaker's ruling because the ruckus that may be raised by the NC and the other Kashmir-centric members may not alter the situation once the Speaker rejects the bills," said sources.
