Thin attendance in offices as Mantris, Babus celebrate Eid on 4th consecutive day

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 28: Most of the government offices including the Civil Secretariat here witnessed thin attendance today as many ministers and officials remained away from their chambers on the 4th day of Eid-Ul-Azha, which concluded last week.
While some are understood to have spent the day with nears and dears, celebrating extension of the Muslim festival, others, mostly from Jammu region found it opportune time to visit their "forgotten constituencies."
Sources said most of the Ministers and senior bureaucrats didn't visit their offices for the day putting the visitors to inconvenience. "Last week, Ministers and officials were missing from their offices with a plea that they were busy with arrangements for the Eid. But now that the Eid is over they are now busy with celebrations," said an old man from Handwara while leaving Civil Secretariat in disgust.
If this was the scene in the Civil Secretariat, the situation elsewhere was no better. People said attendance was minimal at most of the Government establishments including the offices of Directorate of Industries, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Regional Transport Office, Directorate of Social Welfare and the Government schools and colleges. "At our office the staff had come only to mark attendance and left by 11:00 AM," said a SMC employee adding he would celebrate the day with his family.
Both PDP and BJP ministers had reasons to be away from their offices. Sources said some of the PDP ministers wanted to skip public gatherings given the public fury over internet ban which lasted for three long days during the festival. "They wanted to avoid media queries," said a party insider.
The BJP Ministers on the other hand dedicated their time in "improving public relations" in Jammu ahead of the darbar move. Sources said given the poor performance of the BJP ministers towards Jammu in the last six months, they were directed by the party leadership to spend the time in the region or they would be greeted with brickbats once darbar reopens in Jammu.
Sources said decision in this regard was taken last week when senior BJP leader Ram Madhav visited Jammu. "He (Madhav) told the party leaders that public feedback of their performance was poor and they need to improve their face value before the darbar moves to winter capital," said a party leader pleading anonymity.
He said in the past six months the BJP leaders have not only failed to come up to the expectations of the people but have even failed to remain connected with them. "It was only because of this that the BJP ministers including Dr Nirmal Singh dedicated Eid holidays for Jammu visit," said the party leader.
He said while Dr Nirmal Singh visited districts including Udhampur and Jammu, his counterparts visited other areas.
Minister for Industries and Commerce Chander Prakash Ganga kickstarted various development works in Bari Brahmana including Dholian, Karsoli, Tabela and Khadgal villages of Bari Brahmana. The Minister for Social Welfare, Forest, Ecology and Environment, Bali Bhagat visited Bhagwati Nagar and other localities in Jammu. He also participated in the birth anniversary of Shaheed Amarnath Bhagat near Civil Secretariat Jammu.
Minister for Health, Medical Education Ch Lal Singh spend most of the time in Udhampur district.
