Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 28: There is an old saying that politicians change colours like chameleons. The same may not be true for every politician, but it fits the bill for National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The NC President has been changing stands like anything with people perplexed as to what his real face is.
The NC President today issued a statement in which he said a sustained dialogue between India and Pakistan alone can bring peace and development in the sub-continent. He said that the outstanding issues can be solved only through dialogue and reconciliation.
Not long ago, Dr. Abdullah would vouch for the bombing Pakistan saying that there is no need to carry out talks with the neighbouring country. The NC President even went to the extent of saying that there is no place for the separatists in the jails in the state and as such they need to be killed and their bodies should be dumped in the river Jhelum.
Today's statement of NC President is quite contrary to the stand adopted by him with respect to Pakistan and the utility of dialogue with that neighbouring country. In fact in the past it has been observed that the stand adopted by the NC leaders was quite different from that pursued by Dr. Abdullah.
While majority of the NC leaders have in past stressed the need for dialogue between India and Pakistan their President has been holding a different view. But it seems that age has started to show its impact on the NC President as he too now-a-days talks about dialogue and reconciliation between India and Pakistan.
Since Dr. Abdullah is a 'maverick' one cannot believe him and he may issue a contradictory statement to the one issued today. The NC President always wants to be in news and as such can go to any extent in this regard. He wants coverage in the media and would not shy away from issuing even controversial statements.
The NC President is not a twitterati like his son Omar Abdullah and believes in traditional means of communicating with the masses and above all the media. It remains for how long he will stick to today's statement and when would he change his statement as has been the case in the past not once but more than that.
Since Dr. Abdullah and his party are out of power these days one can expect them to issue statements that may go well with the people of state more those living in the Kashmir valley. He wants to gain some sympathy from the people of Kashmir and what better way than to please Pakistan and also the separatists.
By saying that dialogue alone can lead to resolution of issues between India and Pakistan, the NC President wants to please the separatists more so the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Dr. Abdullah wants to strike a chord with the people of Kashmir and the appeasement of separatists seems to be a good way out.
