| The life of human has a stage wherein he or she goes to school for gaining education. The mode may seem common for education but difference lies in the pattern of education i.e. government schools and private schools. No such system exists which talks to maintain difference in teaching system of government schools and private schools. Inspite of this a large variation can be seen in the personality of a government school student & private school student. Of late, this variation has increased in India after independence as it were government schools only which produced many like APJ Abdul Kalam who took country to these heights. In last 60 years of independence the country has seen many alumni of government schools across India who shined like a star. The privatization of education was believed to become a fortunate thing but was never thought to happen at the cost of government schools. At present, education in the government schools is considered to be at its lowest in form of deliverance. A common system of poor education standards exists across government schools in India and the state of J&K is also a part to it.
Giving free education, textbooks, meals and uniforms is not a charity but a right of any children going to a government school. On the other hand no such things are provided in a private school to children. Thing to be seen here is that those who are provided all this free of cost are not in a better position than the ones not getting it. Education is a national goal of any welfare state but now days it seems to be achieved through private schools. It is a duty of our government to ensure education to every citizen of the country, as government has planned to provide free and compulsory education up to 14 years of age. To fulfil its basic goals, government appoints highly qualified people in the country as teachers through long process of selection. But still teacher absenteeism, lethargy leaves, deficient supervision represent the government teachers.
Government in J&K spends large sum of money on schools and gives respectable salary to teachers, because of which it is perceived as a demanding profession. Among females in J&K, teacher's job is in demand because of conveniences like job security, good salary, limited working hours & countless benefits like maternity leave, study leave, childcare leave, medical leave, without pay leave and 15 days casual leave.
Though many amenities are provided for these teachers but still government in J&K could not achieve the target of real education and produce effective results. The teacher fraternity of J&K government schools shifts reason for their inefficiency to 'lack of interest' and 'motivation of students' coming to government schools. They also term them as 'unreserved' and 'difficult to control'. Whereas, teachers in private schools in J&K who get 1/3rd of the salary provided to the government teachers, still give effective performance and results.
This positive output in private schools here is somewhere also because of flexibility of these schools to hire and fire teachers. One complaint against a teacher from the parents in private school and teacher gets a warning. On two to three complaints, teacher is fired from the school. They have a systematic supervision, like coordinators, block incharge, vice principal and principal who keep a regular check on the working pattern of teachers. All this keeps private teachers always on toes and work hard to show best results. While their counterparts in J&K government schools are always relaxed and live a life of leisure.
Usually the day starts on reaching school with a hot cup of tea made either by the mid day meal cook or the student. At times after tea, day may begin if the strength of children is good. But if attendance is thin, then students from all the classes are merged and made to sit in one class, so that teachers can contribute to gossip. Furthermore, it is witnessed that even to save their time, teachers organize salesmen of suits, sarees, and bedsheets in school for shopping. Now seeing all this any working employee may get jealous of such life.
Though infrastructure is one of the problem in J&K schools but teachers instead of giving excuses and living a leisurely life must expand their horizons.
They should not let constraints bother them, instead they should remember how lucky they are to be in such a noble profession, where they get a chance to do well and serve society. |
