Jammu, Nov 19: In yet another instance of Jammu region being neglected by one and all, the state Handicrafts department has only allotted four stalls out of 37 to artisans from Jammu region that too on sharing basis in the ongoing International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The disclosure in this connection was made by the two women artisans whose stall was forcefully shut by the JK Handicrafts department allegedly for not greasing the palm of the officers of the department. However, the department later let them re open their stall after the news item carried by the Early Times attracted the attention of the higher ups of the department. Their stall remained shut for two days after they allegedly refused to pay the bribe. "We were left high and dry after our stall was shut forcefully as we refused to pay Rs one lakh to the officials led by Deputy Director Adm who posed herself as Joint Director of the department," the artisans Thakurals alleged, adding, it was after the intervention of the higher officers of the JK Handicrafts they were allowed to re open their stall. The incident, however, brought ignominy to the JK Handicrafts department at the International level at the 35th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF) which kicked off at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on Nov 14, Saturday, at a high note as Over 7,000 domestic and foreign firms from 28 countries take participation in the fair. However, Director Handicrafts Gazenfar Ali while refuting the allegations said that the stall was shut as the ladies were selling Kashmiri products in Jammu's stall, adding, even they sold the stall to some Kashmiri artisans for Rs 50,000. Pertinently, the India's largest fair is annually organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) at Pragati Maidan. The event is held from Nov 14 to Nov 27, every year. IITF serves as a global platform for exhibitors from around the world to showcase their goods and culture. |
