Mehbooba's elevation to top post would rejuvenate PDP

srinagar, Nov 19: The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has already termed his daughter and the PDP cheif Mehbooba Mufti as the most deserving Chief Minister of the State- making everyone within the political spectrum think- would she be able to deliver on ground.
"It's a democratic process. Mehbooba has been working in the field as party president. She has represented an Assembly constituency and now represents a seat in the Lok Sabha," Mufti said, adding that his daughter deserves State's highest political chair.
But, vital question is that what could be the fallout of her succession within her party, the PDP-BJP coalition and the larger politics of the State.
Sources within the PDP stated that the elevation of Mehbooba to the top post would not only be synonymous to rejuvenating the party but setting new trends for the women in the State.
In the 2002 Assembly polls, the party won 16 seats, enabling it to form a coalition with the Congress. Mufti became Chief Minister for the first half of the Government's six-year term and Ghulam Nabi Azad the later. And at the time when PDP pulled out the sport and broke the coalition, it was not Mufti but Mehbooba who was dominating the scenes- remaining on the forefront and making vital decisions.
Sources said that even at present it is Mehbooba who is handling entire affairs of the party. It is she who directs the Ministers to remain close to people and ensure better governance on ground.
There are few within the party who propose Mehbooba's oath ceremony to be held after Darbar Move and some suggesting after the Government completes its one year in office.
Mehbooba addressed her party workers in south Kashmir and all of a sudden in the middle of her speech broke down. During her speech, the PDP president mentioned her father, but could not complete the sentence. "He is not in the best of his health. He has sent greetings to all of you," Mehbooba said. She paused. Wiping the tears from her head scarf, she continued, asking the party workers to pray for the long life of her father. Sayeed's falling health has led to speculation whether Mehbooba is going to replace her father as the Chief Minister in coming months.
Currently, the PDP has 28 seats in the Assembly and had only lost by less than 1,500 votes in 15 or so seats in the 2014 Assembly elections. Since 1999, Mufti has emerged as the biggest challenge to the National Conference and Congress in the State.
Political pundits here are terming Mehbooba a great rabble-rouser who can work on the streets. But it has to be seen when and if she replaces her father, whether she can retain the command and authority that Mufti has had on the party.
