Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 19: A displaced Kashmiri Pandit family has lost the sole bread earner allegedly to the red tape and abhorrent attitude of officials in the Relief Commissioner's office.
The family has accused Relief Commissioner's office of having killed their sole bread earner and sought enquiry into the manner in which 60 year old Bansi Lal Hangloo was harassed and humiliated by the officials in Relief Commissioner's office at Jammu. They have alleged that Hangloo suffered massive heart attack and died 5 days ago on November 14, 2015.
The anger of the family could be gauged from the fact that they have used the social media network to spread the word and termed the death of Hangloo as assassination of a man fighting against all odds. In a facebook post accessed by Early Times, the younger son of Late Hangloo has accused the Relief Commissioner's office of assassinating his father. He has accused the Relief Commissioner of being corrupt and sluggish.
Presently, R.K. Pandita is Relief Commissioner (RC) Jammu. In the facebook post, the family of late Bansi Lal Hangloo has pleaded with the community members to contribute generously so that they could pay off the debt amounting to Rs. 80,000. The one who has posted the details has said that Hangloo was a gentleman throughout his life.
He has further said that Hangloo is survived by two sons and a wife. The post further maintains that the elder son of Hangloo is a Government employee, presently living in Srinagar with his family. It has been claimed that Hangloo's elder son is earning too little and too less to support family of more than 5 members. Hence, he is living separately in Srinagar and looking after his own family.
Hangloo's son who is living in Jammu is a school student and hence, has no means of earning. The only way in which late Hangloo was running his family was the monthly meagre relief which he would get from the Relief Commissioner's office. But in December 2013, the monthly relief which Hangloo used to get to feed his family was stopped by Relief Commissioner on the grounds that his elder son had got employed.
Hangloo was told by the officials in the Relief Commissioner's office that he cannot be given the relief since his elder son's name, who had got Government employment was still in the ration card. Late Hangloo kept pleading with the officials in the Relief Commissioner's office that his elder son was living separately and that he had no means of income other than the relief money. But none paid heed to his repeated pleas.
According to the post, Late Hangloo would visit the Relief Commissioner's office daily, pleading with one or the other official for redressing his genuine grievance. But from Relief Commissioner R.K. Pandita to the lower rung officials, none heard him. A heartbroken Hangloo did not give up until one fine day; he suffered a heart attack which he survived. But after having come back home, Late Hangloo had no option but to keep going to the Relief Commissioner's office seeking justice.
He was unable to bear cost of his medicine but late Hangloo somehow managed money from one or the other source. This resulted in Late Hangloo accruing Rs. 80,000 debt. What made matters worse for him was that his wife had to undergo an Appendix operation. Late Hangloo kept up his fight against the unjust system but ultimately lost the battle on November 14, 2015. Hangloo is no more but his son has kept his fight against the system alive.
