Will Tariq Karra be Gul Shah of PDP?
11/20/2015 12:24:57 AM

Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 19: First time in last 17 years, the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) is facing rebellion from a senior leader, Tariq Hamid Karra, who is presently the Members Parliament and leads a revolt within the Party aimed at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter.
Karra is known to be as Chief Mobiliser within the PDP because he was in charge of district meetings till last year. A week before Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's visit to Srinagar, he bluntly refused to mobilize PDP workers in the districts forcing the PDP patron himself, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and party president Mehbooba Mufti to mobolise people on their own.
Karra made his political entry in National Conference, later he joined Ghulam Muhammad Shah's Awami National Conference in 1996 and remained provincial president of ANC for more than two years. He used to say that Gul Shah is his Political Mentor.
After the formation of Peoples Democratic Party in 1998, Tariq joined it and groomed many MLA's in PDP including Qazi Afzal, Aasiya Naqash his sister in law, Ashraf Mir and many others.
Will Tariq go back to his political roots which are deeply entrenched into a Gul Shah's politics of rebellion? "Such people of rebellions have never lasted longer. When, GM Sadiq made Democratic National Conference out of National Conference, he lost his political weight. Similarly Gul Shah remained Chief Minister for two and half years only.
It is pertinent to mention that during Farooq Abdullah's Government in 1984, Gul Shah rebelled against party command and formed the Government with other rebels. Will Tariq follow the same path?
Karra, who had remained the former Finance Minister of State and core member of PDP is famous for his dual currency idea, was declared 'Man of the Match' last year when he emerged victorious by a margin of over 40k votes in Lok Sabha elections defeating NC big-man Dr Farooq Abdullah.
He did not even attend many important meetings of the PDP among one which was held in Srinagar on October 21 under the leadership of party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti. This was despite the fact that he was very much present in the Valley that day, and absence from the meeting was taken a serious note of.
However, reliable sources in PDP said that Party President Mehbooba Mufti is personally involved over Karra's anguish within the party, "Mehbooba Mufti is using an influential businessman to calm down Tariq Karra and to get him in confidence," sources added.
A senior leader downplayed Tariq's `anti-party' activities. "Well he is a senior party leader and we respect him a lot. Issues can be sorted out by negotiations," he said.
When contacted Karra said, "I am out of station so I am not able to comment on this issue."
