srinagar, Nov 19: Minister for Health and Medical Education is going gaga these days after Jammu & Kashmir received the state of states award during a function held recently in the union capital, but the truth of matter is that health services are in shambles in the rural areas of the State.
Had the position of health institutes been satisfactory in the countryside then the hospitals located in the cities and other urban areas would not have been crowded with patients and their attendants. At the same time complaints are pouring that the doctors and other staff posted at health centres in villages is not discharging their duties in an honest manner.
The Health and Medical Education Minister himself witnessed the sorry state of affairs during his tour to one of the health institutions in South Kashmir. During his visit to Dooru Health Minister found that the doctors posted there at the Sub District Hospital are absent. He has since then ordered for the transfer of the doctors to some far-off places.
Sources said that the absence of the doctors at Dooru health institution is a tip of the ice-berg since similar complaints are coming from the other rural as well as far-off areas of the State. They said the complaints addressed by the locals have fallen on deaf ears since no corrective measures have been taken by the people at helm.
"One fails to understand the parameters followed by the India Today group that awarded Jammu & Kashmir with state of states award in the health sector. The health sector is in shambles in the rural areas of the state and still then the state gets the award. It seemed to be a fixed match and the Minister concerned in his heart of hearts also knows it very well," said sources.
Sources said that although there is a marked improvement in the condition of the hospitals in Srinagar and Jammu cities, but the situation is abysmal in the rural areas. They said that even at district headquarters the Health Department has failed to come up to expectations of the people with complaints pouring in like anything.
"The Health and Medical Education Minister should not take credit for the improved performance of city hospitals since there are other factors responsible for the same. He should focus on the condition of hospitals and other health institutes in rural and far-off areas. If he is able to improve the condition of these health institutions then only he and his department can claim to be real recipient of state of states award in the health sector," said sources.
Sources said that some of the doctors working in the rural areas of the state are taking their responsibilities lightly and as such take the patients for a ride. These doctors leave their stations according to their own will and there is nobody to take them to task. They said spirit of accountability needs to be inculcated in the medicos and other staff so that the desired results are achieved in the health sector in the State.
