Early Times Report

Poonch, Nov 19: The residents are up in arms against the concerned authorities of the Power Development Department (PDD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department as the duo has failed to provide potable water and electricity from past many weeks.
According to sources dozens of villages in Mendhar tehsil viz. Mohra Kallar Balakote Sangoite Kalaban Harni Nar, Gohlad, Mohalla Kote, Ferozalan and Mendhar Town also are without water an electricity courtesy lackadaisical approach of Power Development Department (PDP) which have failed to unscheduled power cuts.
"From past many weeks, our area faced several unscheduled power cuts. We will be forced to stage protests if power supply is not provided to us as per the schedule," said sources.
Talking to Early Times Tazeem Shah of Gohlad said, "We are facing unscheduled prolonged power cuts electricity despite paying our regular bills. He asked what will happen if we won't pay any bill in future."
Local resident said that the PDD authorities have resorted to hourly power cuts in these areas without any yard sticks for metered or non-metered areas.
"The power cuts are worst in rural areas of Mendhar, where people are already facing shortage of other sources of energy be it LPG and Kerosene oil," said a local.
A group of locals from Harni village alleged that PDD has taken them for a ride as despite tall claims from PDD authorities that they are getting round the clock power, their claims fall to ground as we are facing unscheduled prolonged power cuts since a week.
"Due to power curtailments people are facing acute shortage of drinking water, many rued and added that taps went dry for the last few weeks but none from PHE yet has bothered for this inspite of repeated requests.
Locals also alleged that road connectivity to many villages is still poor though the R&B authorities claim large numbers of villages have been linked with roads through PMGSY scheme.
"As the winter has almost approached and unscheduled power cuts have exaggerated the miseries of people in Mendhar town and its adjoining areas," locals added.
As per local sources residents of various isolated and neglected villages of Kandi belt still are dependent upon conventional methods of life like burning of wood and oil lamps to illuminate their houses that too in the 21st Century, which is completely showing the callous attitude of the government towards these far flung areas, said another local resident of an area. When contacted senior official of district administration Poonch on anonymity told Early Times that both electricity and drinking water issue will be looked into at earliest. However the official further maintained that the process is time consuming but he assured to redress the issue within a week's time.
