Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 19: Amid tall claims of transparency and accountability, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department gifted a flawless drain in Srinagar for "reconstruction" to an influential Political worker, in an obvious bid to avail him illegal pecuniary benefits.
A video and photographs in possession of Early Times reveals how R&B department dismantles a well laid surface drain from Kathi-Darwaza to main road from opposite side of Gurudwara to appease an influential political worker of the area.
The video shows that drain which leads to Makhdoom Sahab Shrine and Central Jail areas at Kathi-Darwaza crossing needed minor repairs on opposite side of Gurudwara wall and not complete reconstruction as was done by R&B department recently.
Locals of the area said that R&B department all of a sudden started dismantling a well laid drain and added loss to the state exchequer by wasting money to benefit influential political worker.
Dr Mushtaq Khan, a local social activist alleged that the work was allotted to one influential political worker on the directions of a noted politician of Srinagar city who in nexus with some officials of the R&B department swindled Public money with impunity.
"Vigilance organization should take a serious note of it and start a time bound probe to book all those involved in this scam so that public money meant for developmental purposes can be used as per need and necessities of common masses,"Khan told EARLY TIMES.
Locals said that there are hundreds of other places in the area where people have been approaching concerned department for construction and repairing of drains and roads but no attention is paid to their needs.
"It would have been a good move if concerned department had consulted locals of Kathi-Darwaza and adjoining areas before spending public money wherever it was needed and not wasted it to benefit one particular person."Syed Abid, a local said. Pertinently, when Early Times contacted Chief Engineer R&B, Satish Razdan, he claimed that reconstruction of drain was started only after receiving representations from Gurudwara committee as leakage was posing threat to the Wall of Gurudwara on road side.
However the video and photographs refuted his claims. Razdan said that he is well aware of the development and though he does not know exactly how and when tenders were issued but he has already asked for preliminary report to investigate the nature of allegations.
"By Saturday I will complete probe in this matter as I have asked S.E to collect all the necessary details and after that if anybody is found involved in any kind wrong doing, strict action will taken against him."Chief engineer R&B said.
