Separatists reject BJP leader's offer of talks
5/20/2016 12:19:47 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 19: The BJP leadership has been reprimanded by the separatists over fiddling with the sensitive issues.
On May 15, a senior BJP leader went out of the way and asked separatists to initiate dialogue with New Delhi over Kashmir resolution. "The State government is ready to facilitate talks between GoI and the separatists. As per the Agenda of Alliance, we will like to revive the GoI-separatist talks as was the case during Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government," said the leader.
But, worst was yet to come. Separatists who were offered talks ridiculed the leader, saying it is not his 'prerogative' to invite them for talks.
Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who has been advocating Delhi- Separatists talks since too gives cold shoulder to the offer made by the BJP leader. "There seems no indication or move to engage us [separatists]. The red line drawn on our meetings with Pakistan officials may be withdrawn but BJP's position on Kashmir is only hardening. So the BJP leader's offer cannot be taken seriously unless it comes from New Delhi," the Mirwaiz.
What is causing jittery in state's mainstream camp is the authenticity of the statement made by the leader. There are political groups who opine that the leader should not have meddled with such subtle issues, rather he should have concentrated over the measures needed to be taken for ending the governance deficit.
Sources said that there is concern being expressed by several top BJP leaders at New Delhi over the leader's statement that has outrightly been rejected by none other than the separatists.
The BJP high command too, as per sources, isn't much happy to what the leader has said about the offer of talks. The senior BJP leaders are terming the leader's statement nothing but tantamount to revealing the cards that too much ahead of the time.
It was informed further that the leader's statement has weakened centre's position vis-a-vis the stand adopted for the separatist leaders and it has attained more significance when the separatists have rejected him.
Mirwaiz while reacting to the BJP leader's statement termed the BJP policy on Kashmir "very confusing". "On the one hand MP Subramanian Swamy calls for resolving the issue by 2017 by taking away J&K's special status, on the other, (BJP leader) offers dialogue in the Valley. It seems they are playing to the gallery," said the Mirwaiz.
Pertinently, the separatists have held direct talks with Manmohan Singh-led UPA government but again the dialogue process could not continue.
Except Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, other top separatist leaders, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik and separatist-turned-mainstream leader and now minister Sajjad Lone have held talks with GoI.
