Azad buries hatchet, ropes in Sharma brothers

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 19: The senior Congress leader and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad sprung a surprise on Wednesday by indicating that factionalism within the party is harming Congress in Jammu region. During his brief visit to Jammu yesterday, he (Azad) apparently buried the hatchet and remained in the company of Shamra brothers (Sham Lal Sharma and Madan Lal Sharma) senior Congress leaders from the state.
The Azad loyalists were surprised to see the trio together. The former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and some others of Azad camp went into a tizzy when they came to know that both Sham Lal and Madan Lal Sharma received the Congress stalwart and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at Jammu airport.
According to the sources, Azad had informed the Sharma brothers to accompany him during his brief visit here yesterday for offering condolences to the bereaved family of late Dr Ramesh Sharma at Sunderbani.
After the Azad camp leaders came to know that their boss was arriving here, they rushed to the Jammu Airport for receiving him but as soon as they came to know that Sharma brothers were virtually playing the host and that too on the personal request of Azad himself, they preferred to remain silent, sources added.
Tara Chand, Maheshwar Singh, Vinod Mishra and others remained silent while Jugal Kishore and Arun Sharma were not in Jammu, while Dr Manohar Lal Sharma and Yogesh Sawhney received Azad at the Airport.
Azad did not visit residence of Madan Lal or Sham Lal Sharma for some private discussion over a cup of tea but three leaders were seen holding serious deliberations over how to strengthen the party and take advantage of BJP's failure in Jammu region despite the party getting a historic mandate in 2014 assembly elections.
Though paucity of time was the main reason, sources said, that Azad apparently did not visit the residences of Sharma brothers because of the general belief among Hindus that one should not visit any other's house on return from cremation or bereaved family.
Whatever may be the reason, one thing is sure that the closeness of Ghulam Nabi Azad with Sharma brothers seems a step towards making the Congress stronger in the region.
