Five militants killed in encounter at Drugmulla-Kupwara

KUPWARA, May 21: Five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces today here in this district of North Kashmir. Two soldiers were also injured in the gunfight.
A senior police official told early times that acting on specific information about the presence of militants in Drugmulla village of Kupwara district, a joint team of police and army cordoned-off the area today morning. The security forces were conducting a search operation and the holed-up militants fired at them, triggering a gun battle, the official said.
The official said that two Rashtriya Rifles (RR) soldiers were injured in the encounter with holed-up militants in Check Drugmulla village. "A group of three to five militants had taken shelter inside an abandoned house in the village that was surrounded by the RR, Central Reserve Police Force and police personnel. During the encounter, five militants were killed while as two soldiers also received injuries and they have been shifted to a hospital for treatment and their condition is stable now," said the police official.
The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained but it is believed that they are from Jaish-e Mohammad (JeM) militant outfit. Five weapons have been recovered from the encounter site.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kupwara, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat said that five militants have been killed, and one army soldier was injured in the encounter, adding that all the militants belonged to Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit and are foreigners. "The security forces cordoned off the area and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot. The militants hiding inside the house opened fire, triggering off an encounter," said Bhat. Sources said that a joint team of Army's 47 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off the Check Drugmulla area following specific information about the presence of some militants. The forces, as such, intensified the cordon-and-search operation and fired several motor shells towards the suspected spot. The militants hiding inside the house opened fire, triggering off an encounter, sources said. Sources said that in the initial gunfire a trooper of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) sustained bullet injuries. The injured soldier was identified as P R Mahadev of 41 RR and he was immediately evacuated to nearby military hospital in Drugmulla for treatment. The search operation was going on till the last reports came in.
