Family accuses police of having causal approach in alleged 'Dowry death'

rajouri, May 24: Family members of reported Dowry victim have alleged the police for adopting casual approach to take action against the members of her in-law family for their alleged attempt to set her on fire on May 15 in a remote Chowkian village under the jurisdiction of Darhal police station in Rajouri district.
According to sources one Abdul Hamid (75) resident of Chowkian today alleged that his 18 years old granddaughter Sargam Begam d/o Zakir Hussain (working as driver in Mumbai) was married to one Wasim of the same village about two years ago.
"Wasim is also working as driver in Mumbai and was not at home when Sargam received more than
45% burn injuries at her in-laws house in the same village, he said.
Abdul Hamid added that the family members from victim's in-laws including mother of her husband Rukhsana Begam alongwith her Nazir Begam and her sister in law used to harass and torture the victim for money for the last few months.
"On May 15, we received an information that in suspicious circumstances Sargam had received more than 45% burn injuries and was rushed to hospital at Darhal, he said adding, "she was referred to district hospital and after preliminary medical help from where she was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu for specialized treatment" said Abdul Hamid.
He alleged after few days Mohd Shabir, father-in-law of Sargam, succeeded in discharging her from the Jammu hospital and later they left her at her parents' house for further treatment.
"The matter was brought into the notice of Police at Darhal but police didn't take cognizance of the matter reasons better known to local police and it even didn't entertain our application and recorded the statement of the victim, alleged Abdul Hamid sensing a foul play .
"Today some prominent citizens of the area requested SSP Rajouri to intervene in this matter" said a doctor at Darhal on promised anonymity.
At present the victim is under treatment at District Hospital Rajouri as she was admitted in the hospital after she developed some complication, said Nazak Hussain , uncle of Sargam and added till today evening no police personnel from Darhal police station to record her statement.
When contacted SSP Rajouri Rajeswar Singh, briefly said, "The matter has been brought into my notice and the concerned police might have to recorded the statement of the victim.
"If not, then why? I will inquire the matter and the victim's family members should meet me in my office" he added
