Sailing in two boats

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 24: After announcing that government and separatists are on the same page vis-a-vis return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley and ruling out any possibility about setting up exclusive colonies for migrant Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave the Valley in 1990, the senior PDP leader and a minister on Monday praised Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani for his contribution in education sector, saying, "He (Geelani) has educated lot of youth" in north Kashmir's volatile Sopore town.
"Geelani Sahab has also taught a lot of people here (in Sopore) and apart from him, we have other people who produced educated people in Sopore," the minister said, addressing students and teachers at Government Degree College at Sopore.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Since the day PDP led government has taken over the reins of the state for the second time the PDP minister in question is leaving no stone unturned to appease the separatists and it looks like he is toeing their line."
He said, "One fails to understand why the government is so sacred of separatists, who have become irrelevant in Kashmir. It seems this particular PDP minister wants to go out of way to appease the separatists and keep them in good humour."
A Kashmir watcher said, "The PDP minister wanted to keep separatists happy by ruling out exclusive townships for migrant Kashmiri Pandits, but separatists have hit back and have formulated a joint strategy to oppose the separate colonies for KPs. To begin with separatists have called for a shutdown on Thursday and protests on Friday against the government's proposed move to set up colonies for the migrant Pandits."
He said, "PDP minister's appeasement policy has backfired and separatists are threatening to spoil the tourist season by launching a 2008 like agitation."
A politician said, "Government should learn from its mistakes and stop repeating these. The policy of appeasement is not going to work. Separatists have to be dealt with an iron fist if government wants peace to prevail. If the separatists are allowed to meet each other and devise joint strategies they won't allow people to live in peace and would try their best to vitiate the atmosphere."
He said, "The need of the hour is to show the separatist their right place rather than praising them. The PDP Minister who praised Geelani should bear in mind that Geelani is responsible for instigating youth and pushing them towards taking up the arms. It was at the behest of separatists that Kashmiri Pandits were slaughtered in the Valley in 1990 and they (KPs) were left with no other option other than to flee form Kashmir."
The politician said, "The PDP minister by praising separatists is trying to sail in the two boats. He wants to enjoy power also and on other hand wants to keep the separatists happy. He needs to bear in mind that he has to be either with the separatists or with the country. He cannot be on both the sides."
