Jammu, May 27: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and incumbent Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti were conspicuous by their absence from the State Legislative Assembly, when the House met for the maiden sitting of the Budget session on Thursday.
Political watchers believe that Omar, who was a vehement political opponent of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and highly critical of his latest decision to enter into alliance with BJP to form Government in J&K, could have risen above political rivalry and paid tributes to the departed soul, who quietly gave many a political lessons to the politicians of Omar's generation. "Though Omar is told to have been indisposed, he should have come to the House and paid rich tributes to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed" said a NC office bearer in Jammu. "This act of his would have projected him as a pragmatic leader and a courteous person" he added. "In politics, symbolism matters and Omar lost a symbolic opportunity" he added further.
Mehbooba is understood to have deliberately missed the proceedings as it would have been difficult for her to contain herself while the House paid tributes to his departed father during the obituary references. A PDP office bearer said that as the leader of the House, Mehbooba would have wanted to avoid breaking down in public during the obituary references as she was deeply attached to her father. "As a daughter who was deeply and emotionally attached to her father, it would have been difficult for her to keep her composure in the House and hence she chose to stay away" he averred.
As per the parliamentary traditions and conventions, the House was to pay tributes to the parliamentarians of the country and the state who passed away since the last session of the LA and of the several such leaders, the House was expected to pay rich tributes to late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who led the present PDP-BJP coalition government till he passed away on January 7 last. Political leaders, irrespective of their affiliations, showered accolades on Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for his inclusive brand of politics in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is divided by several dissections.
