Against National Interest
Jammu leadership indifferent to what Mirwaiz is doing in Pak

JAMMU, Dec 19: APHC (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq left Delhi for Pakistan last Saturday to discuss ways and means of resolving the so-called Kashmir issue to the satisfaction of Pakistan and people of Kashmir. Before leaving New Delhi for Pakistan, he made public his stand on Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan vis-a-vis India and left none in any doubt that he had no place whatsoever in his scheme of things for Jammu, Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus and that his fundamental objective was to give some inputs to the Pakistani leadership that could help both of them to achieve what they had been seeking to achieve for years now. Of course, he talked about new outlook that was needed to break the status quo and achieve first goal before the APHC (M) and Pakistan could achieve the final goal: Segregation of Jammu and Kashmir from India on religious grounds and disintegration of the country.
In Pakistan, he has been meeting political leaders of all hues and presenting himself as the true representative of the people of Jammu and Kashmir which he is not. (He represents only a small locality located in Srinagar city.) He has also been singing the old and monotonous UN resolutions song knowing it fully well that it irritates many. The print media in the State has been giving extensive coverage to what he has been saying and doing in Pakistan since Saturday when the process of meetings between him and the Pakistani leadership begun.
It was hoped that the Jammu-based leaders, who day-in and day-out term themselves as patriot of patriots and pro-Jammu, pro-Ladakh and pro-persecuted and hounded out minorities, including the displaced Kashmiri Hindus, would sharply react to what Mirwaiz had been saying, but it has not happened so far. Neither the BJP leadership, which is known for issuing press statements and holding press conferences almost on a daily basis nor the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party has reacted to what could be described as anti-India propaganda in Pakistan unleashed by Mirwaiz. The Panthers Party, like the BJP, is also known for issuing press statements on a daily basis. What has made them watch these ongoing anti-India activities in Pakistan as a mute spectator? They alone can answer.
Paradoxically, even the otherwise quite vocal organizations of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus have thought it prudent to ignore what Mirwaiz and six other Hurriyat leaders have been doing in Pakistan since last Saturday. Are they suffering from a sense of fatigue? It is for them to respond appropriately. No one can speak either on behalf of the BJP and the JKNPP or on behalf of the organizations of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus.
However, it is true that the indifferent attitude of the BJP, JKNPP and the displaced Kashmiri Hindus to what has been going on in Pakistan has raised several questions and disappointed their respective constituencies. It is not only that they have adopted an indifferent attitude towards the Mirwaiz's activities in Pakistan. They also adopted a similar attitude to what Executive Director of Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR) Sushobha Barve did in the heart of Jammu city for three long days (December 14-16). And compare the attitude of the Jammu leadership and displaced Kashmiri Hindus with the attitude of the so-called mainstream Kashmiri Muslim leadership and you will see for yourself the difference. The Kashmiri leadership has been taking keen interest in what has been going on in Pakistan and commenting. Take, for example, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who commended only the other day some of the views Mirwaiz expressed in Pakistan. What has gone wrong with the Jammu leadership?
