| Minister turns residential house into a hotel | | Yet another violation of SMP | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 19: The Srinagar Master Plan (SMP) is an important document, not because it lays down the guidelines for expansion of the fast expanding city but for the breaches that this plan has witnessed over the past three decades. It has been repeatedly prostituted by politicians, bureaucrats and the civilians. In a recent flagrant violation, a Minister turned his residential house into a hotel at posh Rajbagh area much to the annoyance of the residents who have migrated from congested parts of the city to live in peace. While mushrooming of hotels, lodges and guest houses has turned the residential area into a commercial hub, the Minister's guest house is perceived as yet another source of nuisance by the residents. The authorities are mum as the owner of the residential house turned guest house happens to be a Minister and a close aide of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. His proximity with the Chief Minister has prevented the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from taking action against him. This is what a senior official of the SMC candidly admitted. Some people believe that the `controversial' Skewed bridge over Jhelum was being constructed to ensure smooth passage to the guest house. The Skewed Bridge evoked massive criticism from civil society, media and environmentalists who believe it will adversely affect the beauty of the Bund. However, notwithstanding the criticism and opposition, the Chief Minister has given his nod for the project. It has been assigned to JKPCC and is likely to be completed within three years. |
