JAMMU, Dec 19: Is State unit of BJP heading for another split after Dec 22….? If the mood that prevails among key functionaries and atmosphere within the organization is any indication the answer may be seen as assertive. With less than 72 hours left for the polls for party's highest post in the State, uncertainty and uneasy atmosphere is what can be gauged as regards the new chief of J&K. Even as there are three strong contenders in fray for the top post, the senior leaders have given enough indications that any President 'imposed' on the party shall have unpleasant ramifications in terms of the unity and strength of the party.
Sources said with all requisite steps and measures in progress and place for the election for president in the state unit, all is still not perfectly well within the party hierarchy. " It is tough situation this time…..a war of nerves is going on at different levels with supporters of contenders grouped as coteries….", said a senior leader of the party while describing the mood within the organization this time. This has sent the things into a mode of uncertainty for the final outcome , he added.
Sources, however, said all the contenders Kavinder Gupta, Jugal Kishore Sharma besides the sitting president who is also vying hard for the second term, are trying every effort to 'influence' Central leadership and garner their support for getting the coveted post. No matter there is proper system for choosing the president, yet it is the influence of certain quarters in Central leadership of BJP that works 'magically' for such elections, sources said adding, which is why they are using all their links and backdoor channels for that push and 'click'. Sources said the sitting president Shamsher Singh Manhas too is desperately trying his luck for the second term.
While on one hand this game of one up manship is going on to woo and influence all concerned quarters, the mood is not upbeat for this vital political activity nor is any enthusiasm seen in the entire organization. There is more than one reason for the same, sources said adding that the cumulative indication and message committed cadres and activists as also the senior leaders are giving, though not in loud manner, is that only a person with commitment and conviction to work for party interests, groom it in right direction by taking all sections and communities on board, and above all a one having clean, respectable public image would be acceptable to the party.
Sources said some senior leaders have already conveyed it to party leadership in New Delhi that no matter the contenders are trying their best to be in the prestigious chair, it was for former to have the most 'appropriate' person chosen as president for a politically sensitive and complex state like J&K. The functionaries have given enough indication that any attempt of 'imposing' the new state chief would result in party facing a split or more leaders parting away for better alternatives, sources added.
