| BJP hits nail on head, says appeasement emboldens K fundamentalists | | Fatwa against talent | | Rustam Jammu, Feb 5: Grand Mufti of Kashmir Bashir-ud-Din Ahmad on Sunday issued a fatwa against three Kashmiri girls for being part of a rock band. Issuing the Fatwa, the Grand Mufti had, inter-alia, said: "Rock band girls should not perform in front of an unknown audience. If the girls want to continue with music, they should do it within their families and relatives but not in the open. The (Music and singing) is the first step towards bulldozing our moral and Islamic fabric in Kashmir. All the bad things, including gang rape, happening in the Indian society are because of music". The all-girl band, which had come to limelight late December last year after their performance at the annual "Battle of the Bands" competition, was already facing online threats and hate messages in the wake of the fatwa issued against the Kashmir's only all-girl band - Praagaash. The mortally afraid talented girls have withdrawn themselves from rock band. The fatwa evoked a very strong reaction even from some Kashmir-based parties like the PDP and common Kashmiris. As for fundamentalist and separatist outfits like Dukhtran-e-Millat and APHC-G, they, as expected, stood solidly behind the Grand Mufti. Dukhtran-e-Millat even threatened social boycott of the girls' families in case they continue to perform before an unknown audience. However, it was the State BJP which hit the nail on the head and said that what has been happening in the Kashmir valley has been the outcome of policy of appeasement. It is "appeasement" of militants that has "emboldened fundamentalists" in Kashmir" to issue such fatwas against talent. The BJP very rightly described the roundly-condemned fatwa as an "attempt at Talibanisation of the society by certain fundamentalist groups". The BJP not only denounced the fatwa and the policy of "appeasement", which it described as the root cause of all troubles in the Valley, but also accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of not taking any step to rein in fundamentalist groups who have been seeking to Talibanise the Kashmiri society. "Even though the Chief Minister had denounced the fatwa on Twitter, the State Government had so far done little to provide security to the members of the rock band or to dissuade the fundamentalist groups from holding them to ransom," the BJP said. The BJP was absolutely right when it said that "it was because of the Government's appeasement policy towards separatists and militants that fundamentalists felt emboldened to hold out such threats". Indeed, what has been happening in Kashmir since decades now has been the result of the utter failure of the men-at-helm to discharge their obligations towards the State and society. The fact is that there were, and are, elements in the establishment who overtly and covertly promoted, and continue to promote, radical Islamists. They are not only responsible for the ongoing process of radicalisation in the Valley, but also for the exodus of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus in early 1990. The New Delhi's policy of appeasement too has contributed significantly to the ongoing process of radicalisation/Talibanisation in the Kashmir valley. The fact of the matter is that the authorities in the State and at the Centre have allowed things to deteriorate to the extent that fundamentalist groups and regressive forces across the nation feel emboldened to do what they want. |
