JAMMU, Feb 19: Poonch township and even the peripheral areas of the border district last night witnessed festive celebrations by the people and a wave of jubilation was for real as though for some festivals like Eid or Diwali. The best part of this jubilation and spirit of celebration was involvement of people from all communities. It was for a cause, perhaps they were awaiting for long time. The mandate to most respectable leader of the district Yashpal Sharma by opposition party PDP for MLC berth came as no less than a matter of personal happiness for all communities who reveled in their own small way ,a thanks giving gesture to the Party Patron Mufti Sayeed.
PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has chosen Sharma for a berth in the Upper Council for whatever considerations , but the decision has augured well for PDP for more than one reason. On the political spectrum by observers this might be seen as a master move by Mufti to consolidate further gains his party has made politically over the last few years in the border district. But, the decision is being deciphered as beyond the nerve stretching strokes of mere politics. Mufti Sayeed's selection apart from accruing gains to his own party in the long run, has indeed sent a strong message of his intent and belief in being secular in practical terms. The message has gone in a loud manner not only in the district but across the region that PDP is no more a Kashmir centric party nor has it convoluted strategy of promoting only a leadership of a particular community. Post 2008, even as PDP and its leadership is aggressively trying to shatter the image built in the minds of people in Jammu region that the party is anti Jammu and it has succeeded in doing that by consistent efforts of the leadership, but the move of making selection of Yashpal Sharma over others in the queue as strong contenders, has connotations beyond the strings and grains of politics.
As for Yashpal Sharma, he is indeed highly respected leader, acceptable to all communities in the district and even in neighboring Rajouri district as well. Sharma has remained politically agile for decades but his acceptance is more for his amiable qualities at the social level and his consistent endeavors to keep the bonds of unity among all communities strong and firm, even during toughest and challenging circumstances caused due to turbulent political situations. The observers even attribute the amity and harmony between the communities in toughest times to the elderly and wise role played by Yashpal Sharma .
All this goes on to explain and demonstrate that perhaps of all the candidates who filed their papers on Wednesday last, it was for Yashpal Sharma that celebrations and joyous spirit percolated beyond his own home and kin, much more at the masses level. |
