Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Frustrated and exposed separatists, in desperate attempt to scale up violence, to save their skin and to appease their masters across the border, have once again given call for three-day strike to protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru, convicted in Parliament attack.
The call for again observing hartal comes after the designs of separatists were thwarted by both the Government and more so by the wisdom of the people.
The separatists had sensed an opportunity for the revival of their dwindling importance after the hanging of the Guru. They had sensed a large scale violence and had hoped to chip in this eventuality to stoke passion, thus more violence.
They had hoped to hit the headlines and TV talk shows.
But their hopes were dashed as people of Kashmir banking on their wisdom rather than on emotions, and ably aided by administration more specifically security forces which exercised maximum restrain, the cycle of violence was nipped in the bud.
A strong measures coupled with sensible back-channel talks with senior people of the Kashmir society ensured the separatists designs are not set in motion which could have only evoked counter reaction from the security forces, resulting in unnecessary loss of human lives.
Now that this has not happened, hard line ultra conservation Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani had now given renewed call for strike. Geelani is trying hard to trigger the cycle of violence.
However, this time he is not getting the support of Pakistan, as it would get in the past, as the neighbouring country is itself mired in deadly cycle of terrorist killings.
The second point Geelani is missing that people have benefited from the peace of two years. More than Rs 1000 crore was pumped in Kashmir economy by about 13 lakh visiting tourists.
This has helped people tremendously economically after two bad years. It was for this reason that Geelani's remarks against dress of visiting tourists and also against US tourists had not gone down well with locals.
Geelani is living in delusion. The time has come for him to grow up, even at the fag end of his life.
