| Selection of Yashpal as MLC candidate | | Mufti stuns NC, Congress | | ET Report JAMMU, Feb 19: Nominate of veteran leader Yash Pal Sharma as one of the party candidates for the elections of Legislative Council seat is being seen as a political master stoke of the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that has left both Congress and National Conference stunned. Mufti, known for such well calculated political moves, has left both the coalition partners with no option but to ensure smooth sailing of two PDP candidates-one each from Jammu and Kashmir regions respectively. Earlier, there was possibility of contest on one of the three seats of Jammu province but Mufti's choice of Yash Pal Sharma has forced coalition partners to play safe and not field any candidate against Sharma, who has a strong influence among PoK refugees from Kathua to Poonch. Insiders in the PDP said that some senior party leaders had shown their resentment against giving mandate to Yash Pal Sharma but Mufti had already decided because he wanted to give a tough fight to National Conference and Congress in 2014 Assembly elections. "Some senior party leaders had earlier raised objections but they were later convinced by the argument of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to give mandate to Yash Pal Sharma", insiders said and disclosed that PDP has already prepared a action plan how to utilize influence of Yash Pal in different areas of Jammu region. Yash Pal Sharma is not only an undisputed leader of Poonch Assembly segment but he also has influence in almost all Assembly constituencies of Poonch and Rajouri. Furthermore, Sharma has good network in Kathua, Hiranagar, Suchetgarh, RS Pura and Gandhi Nagar Assembly segments where refugees from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) has good presence. By making Yash Pal Sharma as Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Mufti wants to utilize his influence to mobilize Hindu votes in Poonch and Rajouri districts. Two Assembly segments of Rajouri district namely Sunderbani-Nowshera and Kalakot are dominated by Hindus but in remaining five Assembly segments of these two districts Hindus are deciding factor so this political move of Mufti is going to give good dividend to PDP in the next Assembly elections. Insiders in the PDP said that two sitting MLAs of Poonch and Rajouri Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan of Mendhar and Choudhary Zulfikar have played very important role in nomination of Yash Pal Sharma as party candidate. |
