| Prof Chaman lambasts Govt for ignoring STs | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 19: Assailing coalition leaders for not providing political reservation to scheduled tribes in J&K, Member of Legislative Assembly Prof Chaman Lal Gupta said that it was strange approach that despite the fact that Gujjars, Bakerwals, Gaddi's, Sippi's and some others were included in the list of Scheduled Tribes decades back, but same were being denied political reservation in J&K unlike other states of the country. According to a press release, Prof. Gupta said that he and his colleagues would take up the issue in the coming session of the State Assembly and question the sincerity of the ruling party leaders. Prof. Gupta recalled that contrary to their lip sympathy with these sections the Congress and NC have virtually denied even their inclusion in the list of scheduled tribes. "But it was only in early nineties during the Janta Rule these tribes were constitutionally recognized by including in the procedural list. Even after their inclusion in the list of scheduled tribes the ruling leaders first denied them political reservation on the plea of there being no census in this State in 1991 because of disturbances. But in 2001 after census the State Government led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah mysteriously amended the State Constitution that there would be no delimitation or reservation of the Assembly constituencies till 2026. Thus, the doors for political reservation for ST's and due representation to Jammu have been closed under a design" he said. Prof. Gupta regretted that unlike other parts of the country that even the poor and down trodden are being denied their due although they from a sizeable section of the people in J&K. More than this, he pointed out that the National Conference Government in their Autonomy Report has even opposed the inclusion of these sections of the people in the list of ST. |
