| Guides harass KU scholars | | | Majid Ahmad SRINAGAR, Aug 3: The scholars of Kashmir University face harassment while completing their research and some even have to leave midway due to the callous attitude of the faculty members of the varsity. Sources told Early Times that two scholars in Political Science Department had to leave their Ph D midway due to the alleged harassment by their guide Dr Naseema Akhtar, a senior faculty member in the Department. "Naseer Ahmad Rizvi, a Ph D scholar had to leave his course after five years of ordeal while Manzoor Ahmad another scholar left after three years. The guide used to exploit these scholars and always used for favours," they claimed. A senior official of the KU wishing anonymity said that Dr Akhtar exploits her scholars and forces them to do her domestic work. "She asked one of the scholar from a rural area to arrange a servant for her failing which she threatened him that he would never be able to complete his Ph D. She misuses her official position and asks her scholars to check the papers for which she is paid money by the university," he alleged. The official claimed that last winter she asked one of her scholar to accompany her to Delhi where she would do correction of his thesis. "The scholar had to bear the expenses of her stay in Delhi for over a month. But despite the scholar who is pursuing his Ph D from the last more than six years hasn't been able to complete the degree," he added. Sources said that several times the scholars had complained with the Head of Department against Dr Akhtar. "However, it seems that HoD is also afraid of her and has failed to take any action against the erring faculty member. She is playing with the career of students and nobody in the KU dares to take any action against her," they claimed. "She doesn't allow her scholars to go for civil service coaching and asks them to do marking of university papers for which she earns hefty amounts," they added. The situation in other departments is no different. "In some cases it takes students a decade to complete Ph D as most of the faculty members are reluctant to do correction of the thesis of their scholars. They ask them different favours and the worst victims are female scholars," sources said. "The candidates who hail from rural areas are asked by few senior faculty members under whom they pursue Ph D to arrange Kashmiri rice, apples and other things. Those who fail to do so have to pay price as they are kept hostages for years together," sources claimed. A group of scholars appealed to the Governor NN Vohra, who is also the chancellor of the KU, and Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad to look into the matter. "We hope that due cognizance will be taken and erring faculty members will be punished," they said. |
