CID verifying antecedents of journalists, prominent persons in Kashmir
8/6/2013 11:25:16 PM

SRINAGAR, Aug 6: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Jammu and Kashmir Police is verifying antecedents of journalists, prominent persons, poets, writers and people associated with Cultural Academy these days.
Sources told Early Times that CID headquarters has shot a letter to police stations across the Valley and asked its personnel to verify all the details of 108 accredited journalists, 17 editors, 189 prominent citizens, 140 poets/writers and 17 persons from Cultural Academy within a week.
The letter sent by SP CID Srinagar to all the branches of CID in various police stations has asked its sub-ordinates to treat the matter as most urgent. Some of the names of prominent persons whose antecedents have been sought include former chairman of J&K Bank MY Khan, former chairman of Public Services Commission Mohammad Shafi Pandit and a few other retired IAS officers.
The list includes names of office bearers of Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association, House Boat Owners Association, Kashmir Economic Alliance, Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other trade organisations.
A senior police official said that the exercise is meant to update the database of the CID. "Authorities should have full knowledge about the activities of the people who matter and who can influence the opinion of the general public. Keeping in view the fact the CID has started the exercise on the orders of higher ups," he said.
However, one of a journalist whose name figures in the list said that the exercise is futile and just carried to harass them. "What is the fun of checking the antecedents of a person again when the same thing has been done in the past number of times. The CID has asked semi-literate persons from the department to carry the exercise. They approach your home in the day time when most of the journalists are carrying their professional assignments," he said.
"Then they ask you family members to send the person to respective police stations next day where you are asked stupid questions. It is wastage of time and nothing comes out of it," he added.
Sources said that the latest exercise has been carried keeping in view the forthcoming elections in the state. "Earlier only antecedents of journalists were being checked. But in the latest exercise prominent people including businessmen, writers, poets and people from other fields have also been included in the list. The Government wants to check the political background and leanings of such people through this exercise," they claimed.
