| Patients suffer as chemicals for testing blood samples run out of stock at SKIMS | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Aug 23: Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, the only tertiary care hospital in the state has run out of the stock of the necessary chemicals used in the laboratories for conducting various investigations and analysis of blood samples. Sources told Early Times that the shortage of the chemicals is causing tremendous problems for the patients admitted at the hospital since the investigations of their blood samples cannot be done in this scenario. They said the SKIMS authorities despite knowing the fact have so far taken no action whatsoever so that the required stock of necessary chemicals is dumped at the specialized hospital. "The stock of chemicals used in laboratories to find the results of various blood tests has run out of stock. As such the results of blood tests of various patients are pending for a long time and there seems to be no end to their miseries. The concerned authorities are not taking the issue seriously and as such the stock of chemicals is yet to be put in place," said the sources. Sources said chemicals are out of stock for the past two months and during this period scores of blood sample have got accumulated at the laboratories. The delay in the proper testing and analysis of the blood samples has put in quandary the treatment of patients who had to carry out the blood tests. My sister had to carry out Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test and same was done on July 3 and since then we been waiting for the report of the same. When I enquired about the delay in the report it was a shock to me that the testing of blood sample is yet to be done. The officials in the laboratory said that the chemicals are not available and such it would take more time for the test to be carried and then only the report is possible," said one of the attendants of a patient. It would be in place to mention here that ANA test detects the auto-antibodies present in an individual's blood serum. The common tests used for detecting and quantifying ANAs are indirect immune-fluorescence and enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANAs, also known as anti-nuclear factor or ANF [1]) are auto-antibodies that bind to contents of the cell nucleus. "If this is the situation at the lone tertiary care hospital then one can easily understand the situation at the other health institutions mostly in the rural areas. The state government has failed to deliver the goods as far as providing standard health facilities to the people. The chemicals out of stock at SKIMS should be added to stock so that there are no more problems for the patients and their tests are carried out without any further delay," said the sources. |
