| Experts sound alarm against forest encroachment | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 23: The environmentalists and ecologists are worried over the growing constructions in the forest areas by blocking the naturally formed ravines and nullahs posing a severe threat to ecology in the state. Following the recent cloud burst in Uttarakhand which created havoc in Kedarnath, Ruderprayag and other areas of the State by killing thousands of people and washing away standing houses, hotels and other commercial complexes, the environmentalists have sounded an alarm to State Government asking it to take pre-emptive measures to avert any natural calamity in future. Sources said the growing encroachment and land grabbing in forest and hilly areas of the State has been a cause of worry among the environmentalists. They have urged the Government not to delay preventive measures. The havoc created by recent rains in Jammu region resulting in flash floods and washing away of houses in various areas has also been an outcome of disturbed ecology. The experts, sources said have sounded an alarm urging it to stop construction in forest areas. The Government has also been urged not to allow blocking nullahs and ponds. The Government departments have also been asked by environmentalists to ensure that no construction is made through nullahs as this will create a blockade in the flow of water during rainy season and can be a cause of a natural tragedy. Even the environmentalists have objected construction of roads via nullahs or their banks in hilly reaches saying this too will lead to an impediment in natural flow of water during rains and cause destruction. Sources said the environmentalists have also sounded the two shrine boards Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board asking them to take necessary measures in protecting ecology from pollution threat and avoid constructions on nullah ridges and banks. |
