JAMMU, Aug 23: The construction work for the much hyped Bikram Chowk - Gandhi Nagar flyover project is likely to get delayed further, as Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) has failed to resolve the issues of land acquisition. Further the monsoon rain has added problems for the construction agencies to kick start the project work. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had laid the foundation stone of the project on May 24. Aimed to curb the traffic mess from the busy city roads, the 1.5 kilometer long flyover project is to be carried out by the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), but the agency could only barricade the roadside near Bikram chowk "The work on the flyover project was delayed due to some minor issues related to the clearing of construction spot, compensation for the obstructing structures including petrol Pump near Asia hotel", said a official. The anticipated project consists of 53 pillars under the flyover and the 17 meter wide flyover will be of 8 lane road on it. When contacted chief engineer Economic Reconstruction Company (ERA) Tehseen Mustafa, regarding the delay in the starting the project said, "The basic work at the site has been initiated by the workers and there will be visible development on site after when the rainy season ends. He accepted the fact that work was delayed because delay in shifting utilities such as PHE lines, Telephone lines and Electricity wires takes time but the project work will be completed before the due date, he assured. Failure to create any plan to manage traffic in view of Gurupurb procession in the city by Traffic Department, people had to face lot of problems as they remained struck in jam for more than two hours. There was total chaos on the roads and Tawi bridge. During the early morning rush, hundreds of cars, two wheelers and busses were struck in snarl on flyover, Tawi Bridge, Bikram Chowk, Panama chowk and Canal road. Even the traffic police personnel were unable to deal with the traffic as there was no mechanism to deal with the vehicles. Most of the people reached their destinations, particularly offices very late and they had to face lot of problems, while traveling from their homes. Most of the people were fuming at the traffic police for not devising a route plan, which could have avoided chaos. |
