Mustansir srinagar, Aug 26: One CRPF trooper was killed and another injured when militants attacked a National Conference legislator at Awneera village in Watchi constituency of Shopian district today. Reports reaching here said the National Conference MLC, Showkat Ahmad Ganai during his visit to party workers in Awneera village was attacked by the militants in which one CRPF man died on spot while another was injured in the attack. It merits a mention here that earlier in the day militants shot at a police man from point blank range on the same route near in Arwani chowk. The policeman identified as Salamat-ullah Khan, resident of Tangdar, Uri latter succumbed to his injuries in a Srinagar hospital. According to police sources today's twin incidents in the area have surprised the security agencies because the area though not far from the vulnerable Shopian district was relatively calm since last many years. However, MLC, Showkat Ahmad Ganai declined the reports that he was attacked by the militants in the Awneera village. "It is true that I was in the village to attend the marriage of my worker but I was not attacked," Ganai told Early times. He said that when he came out of the function people told him the CRPF personnel deployed in the village for his security were attacked by the militants. "I didn't even hear the gunshots, " he said. Eyewitnesses said panic gripped the village after the attack and people were seen rushing for shelter. "It was an attack on Ganai who escaped unhurt," said a local. Within minutes after the attack, the local police searched the area, police said. |
