Army's operation Sadhbhavana deserves credit
8/27/2013 11:28:52 PM
The Army, that is deployed in Jammu and Kashmir,is remembered only for wrong reasons. Even a minor incident of excesses or killing of a single civilian during handling of protest rallies by the troops is usually blown out of proportion, both by people, political leaders and even the Government. Separatists invariably exploit such incidents for registering their presence. Not to talk of civilians getting injured in Army action soldiers attract criticism if even militants get killed while trying to infiltrate into the state from across the border or when the troops target rebels trying to indulge in subversive activities. And whenever and wherever soldiers come to the aid of people in distress nobody from the political field is heard lauding the role of the Army. People seldom come out in the open to appreciate the work done by the Army. Invariably all these good deeds and people-friendly measures done by the soldiers get known to the media and to people, besides political leaders, through Army press releases. Even after the good deeds are known to people none finds it necessary to praise the Army possibly on the plea that the troops are paid for doing such jobs. This, may be partly correct. Troops are paid to guard the borders, fight the enemy and tackle civilian protest rallies and other acts of violence. If the Army carries out various public welfare programmes it is not part of their job but a gracious act that calls for appreciation from people, Government and politicians. And the operation Sadhbhavana, that has been in force since 1998, has proved of immense help to people. It has brought cheer to those suffering from various ailments,it has come to the needy students who are too poor to purchase books and other items required in the classroom. It has allowed a chance to school going students to have decent classrooms where they can spend time in comfort. The operation has developed read connectivity in the remote villages which have also been benefitted from the mini power plants that were built of the Army.Round the year the Army has been holding medical camps where people undergo free checkups and the patients receive free medicines and other medical facilities. And under the operation Sadhbhavana a number of camps were organised by Army for the treatment of people from far-flung and remote areas of Tulail valley and Machil region, which remain cut-off for six months during winter. People throng to such camps and get proper medical aid. This is evident when about 850 patients, including women and children, were treated and provided free medicines at the camp, held in north Kashmir. The main aim of organising such camps in remote and far flung areas across the Kashmir valley is to provide proper healthcare facilities to people of these villages. When people allow teir womenfolk to attend such medical camps it indicates the high level of trust between people and the Army. But there is no dearth of people, besides separatist, who thrive on widening the wedge between people and the Army. Surprisingly separatists have not yet given call to people to boycott the medical camps organised by the Army. Thank God separatists have not directed people not to use electricity that is generated from the mini projects built by the Army. Hitherto, the separatists have not called on people to stop using roads built by the troops. Possibly separatist know it that people may not respond to their calls because people living in border areas depend on the Army for sustenance. The Army provides jobs to a section of people in the border villages, many are provided ration and even cash relief. You can imagine the assistance people get from Arrmy which has built over 1,000 mini power projects, developed sever al hundred km long roads, built scores of school buildings, play-fields, renovated scores of school buildings, developed libraries and community centres, covered over 90 percent people in birder villages under medical aid. During natural calamities troops are in the forefront of all Government agencies tasked to provide aid and relief to people and carry out rescue operations whether it be the case of landslides avalanches, tremors or floods. People in Jammu and Kashmir are known for being grateful to agencies that render even minor services. Unfortunateely these very well meaning people have been misled by suned anti-Army propaganda launched by the separatists, mainstream political leaders and the vested interests. It is time people are told to shed rancour against the Army and let people treat the Army as their friend.
