| Udhampur's ancient monuments crave for attention | | | Et Report
Udhampur, Aug 28 : The historic monuments are in ruins, thanks to the apathy of the Archaeological Department. NGOs, social workers and historians have repeatedly brought the miserable plight of these places of interest to the attention of the authorities without results. While some of the monuments are being looked after by state archeological department and archeological survey of India, a number of historic places like Kirmichi Pandav temples have no roads to attract the tourists. The demand for a proper road to the temples has not been heeded till date. A local NGO has criticized the government for `step motherly' treatment towards the temples. The NGO believes failure of government to construct the much needed road had exploded the tall claims of preservation of cultural heritage. Udhampur is rich for ancient monuments, says Historian Prof Shiv Kumar Nirmohi. He has recently discovered 12th century Nag temple at Bilur 7 kms away from Majalta. He said that in Kova village of Chenani area several inscriptions and tridents written in Brahmi script have also been discovered. Parvesh Parihar and Anil paba social workers said that temples situated ten kilometers away from main Udhampur city on Udhampur Pancheri road having historic significance is one of the most appropriate sites as far as heritage tourism. They have sought intervention of the local MLA and MP to bring the places like Sudh Mahadev, Patnitop, Pancheri, Basantgarh, Ramnagar on tourism map of the state. |
