Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Police used force and lobbed water cannons on employees of Urban Local Bodies Employees who were proceeding towards the Civil Secretariat and court themselves for arrest as part of their agitation programme in support of their demands.
The police action on the employees led to disruption of pedestrian and traffic movement at the busy Jehangir Chowk and people could be seen running for safety. More than 100 employees of Urban Local Bodies courted arrest and they were lodged at police station Shaheed Gunj located just stone's throw away from Civil Secretariat. Scores of employees of Urban Local Bodies of Anantnag and Kulgam districts assembled at Old Secretariat here as part of the 'Jail Bharo' programme announced by Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) in support of their programme. The employees started their march towards Civil Secretariat while raising slogans in support of their demands.
As the employees reached near the Jehangir Chowk they were intercepted by police personnel already posted at the spot. The police cops asked the employees to retreat and give up on their demand to march towards Civil Secretariat. However, the employees did not listen to the plea of police cops and marched ahead as part of their agitation programme. Members on both the sides entered into heated arguments and none among them was ready to give in.
The police cops after failing to stop the advancing employees started lobbing water cannons on them.
The lobbing of water cannons disrupted the programme of employees and as such they could not reach the Civil Secretariat. The police also bundled more than 100 employees in different vehicles and lodged them at police station, Shaheed Gunj.
Besides ULBEUF Chairman, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori some of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) leaders including Farooq Ahmad Trali were also arrested by the police.
The agitation programme had started on Monday (August 26) with more than 50 employees of local bodies of Pulwama and Shopian districts courting themselves for arrest. While the employees of Pulwama and Shopian districts observed pen down strike on Monday those working in Anantnag and Kulgam districts suspended their work on Tuesday.
Employees of Urban Local Bodies are on warpath over the past few months in support of their demands. The demands include release of pending salaries of six months, re-organization of the local bodies, regularization of adhoc employees and conduct of Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meetings for effecting promotions in the department.
