| Election grapes continue to be sour for separatists | | | early times report Jammu, Aug 27 : Senior leaders belonging to the Panthers Party, the Congress and the BJP have urged the separatists to stop calling upon people to boycott Assembly election other plea that people have the right to choose a Government of their choice. Referring to the latest statement from Kashmir Mirwaiz, Molvi Umar Farooq, in which he has declared that the Hurriyat Conference will not contest the next Assembly election the Panthers Party Chief, Harsh Dev Singh, said that it was his choice and nothing can be thrust on him and his colleagues in the Hurriyat Conference. But Harsh said that it was simply an attempt at scuttling the freedom and right to vote if the separatists give a call to people to boycott the elections. However, BJP leaders, including Ashok Khajuria, said that separatists may not insist on calling upon people to stay away from the poll process because since 1996 Assembly election majority of people have ignored the call for boycott. Khajuria said in support of his contention that people were keen to t ake part in polling that during all the previous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections more than 60 per cent voters cast their votes. Molvi Umar has made it clear that the amalgam led by him won't contest any polls neither would it field any proxy candidates. "Election is a non-issue for us," Mirwaiz has said. "Even the parties which contest polls believe that elections won't be a substitute to Kashmir solution. The parties like NC and PDP are also now speaking Hurriyat's language on the issue. We had been saying that Kashmir is not an administrative issue, now they say the same thing despite contesting polls," he said and added that Hurriyat won't contest upcoming Assembly or Parliament polls or put up proxy candidates. Congress leaders said that the separatists were reluctant tto contest the polls because they believe chances for their success were totally dim. They said when Syed Ali Shah Geelani knew that he would win the poll he sed to contest the election on several occasions he was a member of the Assembly. The Congress leaders suggested to separatists not to mislead and confuse people in Jammu and Kashmir by calling on people to boycott the elections when everybody knows that separatists keep off the poll fray because elections are like sour grapes for them. |
