| Two weeks on, SHRC awaits Govt report | | Kishtwar communal violence | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Aug 27: More than two weeks after Communal violence set Kishtwar ablaze, Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) that had sought factual report from the State Government and Jammu and Kashmir Police on violence in various townships of Jammu province has not received any response from the government.
SHRC official told that so far the government has not submitted any response about the Kishtwar violence. "Due to unabated curfew for quite some time and volatile situation in Kishtwar, the divisional administration might would have been busy and that is it is getting late on part of the government to submit a factual report over communal violence," he said adding that Commission has also sought a detailed report over the functioning of Village Defence Committees in Jammu province.
Taking suo-moto cognizance of media reports, the SHRC's Division Bench comprising members Javaid Kawoos and Rafiq Fida had sought reports on the matter from Chief Secretary of the State, DGP J&K, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Inspector General of Police Jammu and Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar.
"The print media has highlighted the unfortunate incident which took place on the eve of Eid in Kishtwar. Though Government has taken some corrective steps to deescalate the situation and bring the same under control but still it appears that the unfortunate incident and its after effects have violated the basic human rights of many of the innocent persons whose life and property has been damaged," the bench observed. "The state government and district administration is primarily custodian of the life and property of its subjects and the same must be safeguarded and no lapses in this regard can be excused in order to know the stand of the state Government and District Administration," it had observed in the report.
However, the Commission till date has received no response from the government. "We are going to remind the authorities very soon. The Commission hopes that government would submit a factual report very soon," SHRC official said. |
