Jammu electorate might reject the Congress outrightly
2014 general election

Jammu, Oct 17: That the Congress has become unpopular across the country is too well-known. There is also the view that the Congress this time may not win even one hundred seats in the country.
There is also the view that the Congress might not repeat its 2009 performance in Jammu. In 2009, the Congress had captured both the Lok Sabha seats in Jammu province and the victory margin was also very impressive, particularly as far as the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat was concerned. But things today stand totally changed in Jammu province. This is what the pre-poll survey, which was conducted by the C-Voter for two leading private news channels the other day, clearly suggests.
The pre-poll survey suggests that the Congress is sure to lose one of the two seats it presently holds and the BJP is sure to snatch one seat from the Congress party. However, the political pundits believe that it would be a great achievement of the Congress party if it wins even one seat in Jammu province. Their view is based on the premise that the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has not visited Jammu & Kashmir so far and that once he addresses a couple of rallies in Jammu province, things would change dramatically for the party. This view of political pundits cannot be dismissed with a shake of head. The Modi factor is a very important factor in the political situation in Jammu province as it is in the rest of the country.
The question is: Why has the Congress, which won the both the seats in 2004 and 2009, become so weak in Jammu province? The answer is not far to seek. The answer is that the Congress as a party has failed the people of Jammu province who again and again pinned faith in it believing that a vote for the Congress would mean end of the discriminatory policies and justice to them at all levels and in all spheres.
There is no doubt that the Congress has been playing a foul game with them by not honouring the commitments it made in its election manifestos of 2002 and 2008 - election manifestos released on the eve of Assembly elections. In 2002, the Congress had promised regional development board, delimitation commission, implementation of the Wazir Commission report and a fair and just administration, but it did not fulfill a single promise. Rather, it became a party to a policy that was designed to further harm Jammu and jeopardize its legitimate socio-economic and political interests. In 2008, the Congress manifesto said that it would establish regional council in Jammu and made several other commitments with the people of Jammu province, but it again took them for a ride and made common cause with the anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh National Conference.
One would cross the line if he says that the Congress would change its attitude towards the NC and take up the cause of the people of Jammu province. The local Congress leadership cannot change its attitude towards the NC because of the Sonia and Rahul factor. Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi stand solidly behind Omar Abdullah and the National Conference. It is difficult to say that the local Congress leadership would ever muster courage and force the state government to establish regional council in Jammu and compensate the people of Jammu province for the losses they have suffered during all these more than 65 years at the hands of the Valley leadership and its handful of Jammu-based agents. The fact of the matter is that the local Congress leadership is meek and weak and it has no connection with the people.
