| Border situation to improve after Sharif's return from US | | | Et Report Jammu, Oct 22 : Highly placed official circles have indicated that peace and normalcy would be restored on the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan Prime Minister.returned to Islamabad,from his current trip to Washington. These circles said that the level of ceasefire violations on the LOC and the IB had been raised by Pak troops simply to highlight the Kashmir problem so that Nawaz Sharif's plea for US intervention for resolving the Kashmir dispute. They said that since Washington has rejected Sharif's demand for US intervention for settling th Kashmir issue the Pakistan Prime Minister may favour Pak troops to honour the ceasefire on the border. No doubt Washington has assured Islamabad that it would continue to release security assistance but has made it clear that US policy on Kashmir not changed.Report said that the US Department has asked Congress to resume more than $300 million in blocked security assistance to Pakistan. What seems to have left Sharif red faced is Washington's refusal to accept is demand for US intervention for settlement of the Kashmir issue. United States has refused to endorse Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's call for internationalising the Kashmir dispute and has urged him to stay engaged with India for resolving this issue. Senior US officials acknowledged that the United States and Pakistan had, and would continue to, discuss the drone strikes in Fata but only as part of a larger security issue. "On Kashmir, our policy has not changed an iota," the official said. Reiterating America's traditional position on Kashmir, the official said it was for India and Pakistan to determine the "pace, scope and character of their dialogue on Kashmir". During a stopover in London on Sunday, Sharif sought US intervention in resolving the Kashmir dispute. |
